Sacred Scripture is a book about suffering, culminating in the passion of Jesus Christ, which transforms human suffering and gives it new meaning. Physical illness, while not the sum total of human suffering, is in many ways the archetypal form of suffering. The art of medicine, seeking the cure and relief of those who are sick, has thus also been transformed by Christ and given new dimensions.
