Important Update: Changes to F-1 and J-1 Student Status

Dear Students,

We are writing to share an important update regarding a recent US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rule that affects F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors.

Under this new rule, the US government is changing how long you are allowed to stay in the United States. Instead of being admitted for the full duration of your academic program (“Duration of Status” or D/S), your length of stay will be based on a specific end date listed on your I-94 record when you enter the US. This rule goes into effect September 15, 2026.

At this time, we want to reassure you that:

This change does not place you out of status if you are already in the US under D/S, so you can still continue your studies at NYU.
OGS will guide you through any new steps that may be required moving forward.

We have created a dedicated FAQ page that explains what we know right now and what actions you may need to consider. In particular, if you are an F-1 or J-1 student and already know you will need an extension beyond what is currently listed on your I-20/DS-2019, we encourage you to apply for a program extension with OGS as soon as possible (and before September 15) to avoid having to file your extension with the US government. The current US Citizenship and Immigration Services processing fee for I-539 (extension application) online is $420 and by mail is $470. We recommend you apply for an extension no later than August 15, 2026. Please note that you may first need to request an updated I-20 or DS-2019 from OGS prior to filing with USCIS if you apply September 15 and later.
