Getting the Washington Perspective
Council Member Bill Kling joined about 200 business and community leaders for the annual Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce visit to Washington. The group received presentations from U.S. Space Command Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting, who provided an update on the relocation to Redstone Arsenal. The group also met with members of Alabama’s congressional delegation.

Supporting Huntsville Symphony Orchestra
Council Members Kling and Jennie Robinson recently attended the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra’s Season Announcement. During the event, the Council Members talked with former Mayor Loretta Spencer and visited with other city leaders. The evening celebrated the Symphony’s community impact, honored its supporters and partners and provided a first look at events planned for the upcoming season.

Remembering 'Microwave' Dave Gallaher  
At the May 14 meeting, the City Council is expected to vote on two resolutions honoring “Microwave” Dave Gallaher, who died in February. A legendary blues musician, Gallaher was also known for his impact as a music teacher. One resolution will rename a portion of Cleveland Avenue to “Microwave Dave Way.” The other resolution will rename Downtown Dog Spot to “Microwave Dave Dog Spot.”

Heroes on the Block Returns
The fun returns to the Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center with the second annual Heroes on the Block community party on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Huntsville Police and Huntsville Fire & Rescue team up to connect with residents while providing free food and fun for the entire family. There will also be inflatables and games for children and live music for everyone to enjoy. This event is a great opportunity to get an up-close look at police and fire vehicles and learn more about how they keep our city safe.

Huntsville's Hall of Fame Firefighter
Stephanie Pinto, a former star softball player at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and now a captain at Huntsville Fire & Rescue, was inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame on April 13. While that was quite an honor, for Pinto, it’s the third hall of fame that has welcomed her. Read the blog and watch the video to learn more about her inspiring story.

Observing Historic Preservation Month
The City is marking Historic Preservation Month in May with events, programs and storytelling highlighting the region’s Indigenous history. The celebration began with a news conference in Big Spring Park with Mayor Tommy Battle and City Preservation Planner Katie Stamps.
At the recent Historic Huntsville Foundation Preservation Awards reception, Council Member Kling presented Peter Lowe with the Harvie P. Jones Award for his half century of outstanding service to the City's preservation efforts.

The 'Sort Of' Retirement of Rodney McCallie
Community Development will bid farewell to a hero at the end of the year. Well, almost. Rodney McCallie, who has spearheaded volunteer construction projects to rehabilitate homes for low-income seniors, is retiring after 24 years. But to the surprise of no one who knows him, McCallie is not going far. “If you enjoy what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life,” he said.
