The College's newest program is the Supplemental Innovative Research Fund (SIRF), which is open to professional track and tenure track faculty. Our P3 grant provides up to $3000 to help you develop an external funding proposal. If you are traveling to share your scholarship, be sure to apply for a Scholar's Travel or International Travel award. New SIRF awards will support CAS faculty research The College's new Supplemental Innovative Research Fund (SIRF) will bolster research activities of CAS faculty by providing up to $800 to support research-related expenses, including data collection, supplies, publication costs, or research-related travel. Both tenure-track and professional-track faculty can seek support from SIRF once per fiscal year, until funds are depleted. Learn more>>
Munroe Fund provides resources for STEM student researchers The Dorothy Levis Munroe Student Research Fund, managed by the College’s Office of Research, provides awards of up to $1000 to undergrad or graduate students working with faculty mentors from eligible departments: Biology; Chemistry and Biochemistry; Computer Science; Geography, Environment, and Sustainability; Mathematics and Statistics; and Physics. The award can be used for materials and supplies, research-related travel (conferences or fieldwork), or similar expenses, but not for student stipends. Applications are due September 16. New Indirect Cost Rate Agreement UNCG has a new federally-negotiated indirect cost rate agreement, dated March 26, 2024. These rates will be used for all new grant proposals moving forward. Sometimes called facilties & administrative costs (F&A), indirect costs cover expenses that cannot be readily identified with a sponsored program. UNCG's new rates for on-campus research are: 47% of Modified Total Direct Costs (MTDC) through 6/30/2027, and 48% of MTDC from 7/1/2027 until revised. Learn more >>
Effort Reporting moves online via UNCGenie Beginning August 1, PIs, faculty, and staff can certify their grant-funded effort online via a new system accesible through the Employees tab in UNCGenie. Dr. Jeffery Underwood is UNCG's new director of Research Development Last month, Dr. Jeffery Underwood joined UNCG as the new director of Research Development, in the Office of Research and Engagement. In this role, Underwood will help individuals and units indentify external funding opportunities and prepare proposals. Previously, Underwood was associate vice president for research at California State University in Los Angeles. Learn more>>

Highlighting Changes in new NSF 24-1 guidance The new version of the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) went into effect May 20, 2024. Among the changes, applicants will no longer include "Synergistic Activities" in the Biosketch, and a Mentoring Plan will be required for proposals that include funding graduate students and/or postdocs. Changes coming to NIH Fellowship application and review process The NIH fellowship application is undergoing changes that take effect for due dates on or after January 25, 2025. These involve restructuring review criteria as well as changes to parts of the PHS Fellowship Supplemental Form, candidate biosketch, and referee letter instructions. UNCG Internal Research Awards
Full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty, clinical faculty, research faculty, academic professional faculty, and EHRA non-faculty researchers are all eligible for ORE-sponsored Internal Research Awards. These awards offer up to $5000 for individuals, $10,000 for collabortive projects, or $25,000 for larger interdisciplinary collaborative projects.
Funding period: March 2025 - August 2026
Submission period begins: September 9, 2024
Application Deadline: October 21, 2024 at 5:00 pm

This P2 Fellows program supports and advances community-engaged scholarship among UNCG scholars and community partners by providing professional development and up to $16,000 in funding over a 3-year project period. Application deadline: Sept. 27 at 5:00 pm

Proposal Preparation Program (P3)
Provides up to $3,000 to help faculty members prepare an external funding proposal. Funds can be used to collect or analyze pilot data, purchase equipment, travel to archives, or other activities that will lead to a funding proposal. Apply at least 6 months before your deadline. Learn more >>

Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award (URCA)
The URCA helps faculty and students partner in meaningful projects to advance their field of study. Use funds for research supplies, travel, or student stipend. URCA provides up to $3000 for the student and $500 for faculty.

NHC Fellowships
The National Humanities Center fellowships provide up to half-salary. In addition to all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts applications from scholars in the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects.Deadline: Oct 3, 2024.

Ayalew Osena (Biology) received a new 4-year, $450,000 NSF grant for his project Deciphering the mechanisms of iron acquisition and accumulation in the underutilized ancient crop tef (Eragrostis tef). Read more.
Levi Baker, Michael Kane, and Bob Wiley (Psychology) received a new 3-year, $477,000 NSF grant for their project Basic Cognitive Functions and Problem Solving in Close Relationships. Read more.
$1.5M UNCG-led collaborative will focus on clean energy innovations using natural products. The grant from the UNC system is UNCG's first UNC ROI grant. Read more.
Kim Komatsu (Biology) received new grants from NSF and USDA. The 2-year, $183,000 NSF grant is for the project Collaborative Research: Revealing the vast diversity within the legume-rhizobia mutualism. The 2-year, $300,000 from USDA is for the project Plant-soil feedbacks in the legume-rhizobia symbiosis as a key driver of soil health in grazing lands. Read more.

Sally Koerner and Kim Komatsu (Biology) received a new 2-year, $300,000 seed grant from the USDA for their project SEED Grant: Exploring the role of nutrient-based mutualisms in the production and restoration of longleaf pine savanna. Read more.

| Annual COI Disclosure is due Sept. 30

The UNCG annual Conflict of Interest (COI) disclosure is required for all faculty (9 month, 12 month, and part-time), including adjunct faculty members and EHRA staff members. This form should be completed by Sept. 30, each year. PLUS, for each new external funding proposal submitted, they must complete a separate RESEARCH-BASED COI disclosure. Learn more >>
