Mongan ReflectionsFrom the Director
| |
Finally! We are now seeing indications that there is a “light at the end of the tunnel”. The CDC relaxed recommendations for wearing masks, vaccination rates continue to build, COVID-19 incidence continues to drop, outside recreation is being embraced, indoor businesses are reopening, sports and music venues are coming back to life, people working remotely are beginning to return to work, and regrettably, traffic is dramatically increasing.
Regardless of these hopeful indications of a return to our pre-COVID lives, it is also undeniable that we have been forever transformed by this past year. The devasting impact of COVID-19 was relentless and highlighted the many inequities and inadequacies of our public health system. The loss of friends, family members, co-workers, patients, and fellow citizens has been profound; the forced isolation for many seniors and young adults has had lasting psychological impact; and the economic impact is yet to fully play out. At the same time the pandemic continues to sweep across the globe highlighting the enormous gap in wealth and resources, between high- and low-and-middle income countries.
As researchers, we have also been transformed in ways that we could not have imagined just 14 months ago. We witnessed accelerated team science that created vaccines and transformed health care delivery in what seemed to be the blink of an eye. We learned that many collaborations and research endeavors can be conducted virtually. We came to understand that fixed randomized trials and observational studies quickly become difficult conduct and to interpret when the context (and literally the world) is constantly changing.
What comes next? What will be the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health, health care, and on research? How (and where) will we do the work? How do we capture the “lightening in the bottle” of accelerated, agile, and responsive science using new and innovative methods? How do we prepare the next generation of scientists with these critical new methods? How can research truly advance health and health equity?
Before the pandemic, over 70 members of the Mongan Institute participated in 7 different topical workgroups that were tasked with identifying priorities for Mongan’s future. Over the coming months we will be revisiting these priorities to map our future --peering through a new lens, transformed by the experiences of the past year. Rather than signaling a return to the past, the “light at the end of the tunnel” should instead illuminate a new era in equity-focused health care delivery science-- with a permanently altered sense of possibility, pace, and purpose.
