ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF, AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO (Including UC San Diego Health)
UC San Diego Celebration of César E. Chávez Month
This year marks the 20th anniversary of UC San Diego’s community celebration of the life and achievements of César E. Chávez. A community organizer and civil rights activist, Chávez championed the rights of farm workers and civil liberties for Mexicans and Mexican Americans. All are invited to join in a month-long celebration this April, which will feature numerous free virtual programs centered on the theme, “50 Years of the Chicano Movement: Honoring the Legacy and Struggle.” To learn more about Cesar Chavez and the Chicano Movement please visit the virtual exhibit.
To kick off the festivities, we will feature a conversation with actor, comedian and activist Cheech Marin. His keynote, part of the 20th Annual César E. Chávez Celebration Kickoff and Scholarship Awards, will include a discussion of his career in comedy and film, his contributions toward community activism as well as insights on his initiative to curate the finest private collection of Chicano art in the United States through the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture.
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in this annual series that honors the achievements of César E. Chávez, raises awareness about the struggle for equal rights and highlights our campus’s commitment to equity, service and community engagement. To view the month-long calendar of events, please visit the César E. Chávez event page.
In recognition of this annual event, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved for employees to attend a UC San Diego César E. Chávez Celebration event. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of such leave when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
We would like to thank the members of the UC San Diego César E. Chávez Planning Committee for their work to coordinate these educational and celebratory campus activities. Please join us in celebrating the legacy and contributions of César E. Chávez and the Chicanx-Latinx community.
