JMC students working for Good Morning Indian Country, KUJH News and the University Daily Kansan covered elections at the national and local level with live updates on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Coverage by the University Daily Kansan was recognized in this roundup. JMC student Emma Noble worked with KSNT TV 27 in Topeka to provide election coverage for viewers across Northeast Kansas. Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon is the recipient of the 2024 Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing. She will present “Soul of the Story: Writing in the Age of AI,” a lecture on why we write, how we write and why humans are still integral to the writing process. The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Clarkson Gallery in Stauffer-Flint Hall. The lecture will be available to view afterward on the JMC School YouTube channel. Mauve Green, a student in JMC 319, helped Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting in capturing drone footage and photos during the cultural burn demonstration earlier this month. Read more in The Lawrence Times.
Students in last spring’s JMC 440 course (Advanced Digital Marketing, Communications, Advertising and Public Relations) created feature videos that will play through the Native Fashion Exhibition in the Spencer Museum of Art. The exhibition will run from Sept. 1 until Jan. 5. The following students were in the class: Graham Barnes, Olivia Boone, Ethan Enderle, Yasmine Ferhat, Winnie Fiss, Elise Heidrick, Keanen Inthavongsa, Janie Mahaffy, Wairimu Mbogori, Quinn Mozena, David Nelson, Anthony Reed, William Wall and Rachel Yates.
University Dance Company Fall Concert to feature JMC Students: Maren Benz, Rylee Brown, Jazmyne Le and Mallory Price are crew members in the upcoming fall concert. Amirah Sackett, an internationally recognized hip-hop dancer and choreographer, is the guest choreographer. Read more.

Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot was an invited presenter on the “I am First-Gen, and I am KU” panel as part of the National First-Generation College Celebration week. Faculty and staff members shared their experiences as first-generation college students themselves and offered advice to navigate campus, college, and the transition to professional life. The program was developed by KU’s Center for Orientation & Transition Programs. Hendershot studies first-generation graduate students, professionals, and faculty members, including the ways in which they use social media to navigate career and financial decision making.
Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting presented at the Western History Association (WHA) conference. She gave her talk, “Seeds and Beads: Indigenous Persistence in Art and Film,” during a session with titled “Westward Expansions and Cultural Resistance: Reclaiming Spaces and Identity Through Art and Literature in the American West.”

The KU Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will host its third meeting of the year this Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. in Stauffer-Flint Hall, room 303. The group will hear from a sports-focused public relations professional and break down PR opportunities within the sports industry.
JMC Colloquium on misinformation this week: The Community-Engaged Scholarship on Misinformation is Friday, Nov. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery at Stauffer-Flint Hall. Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman, Professor of the Practice Patricia Gaston, Professor Hyunjin Seo, and graduate students Macy Burkett and Olga Morales will host the event along with University of Washington Professor Javin West, who is the founding director of the Center for an Informed Public.
Dole Institute of Politics hosting pair of events: On Wednesday, November 13, the Dole Institute of Politics will be continuing its Discussion Group series titled, “Congress in the 21st Century.” The newest installment will feature former U.S. House members Luke Messer (R-IN) and Cheri Bustos (D-IL). at the Dole Insitute at 4 p.m.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, it will host its biannual Counselors program titled “Should the Draft be Reinstated?” The event will feature a mock debate trial between two teams, each one combining prestigious lawyers with KU students, and will be moderated by the Dole SAB’s Abbie Clements. The Counselors will be the Dole Institute (2350 Petefish Dr.) at 6:30 p.m.
