Students in Assistant Professor of the Practice Alex Treaster’s JMC 645 Media Arts Capstone course visited Kabne’s Markets in Kansas City last week. The class is partnering with Kabne’s to conceptualize and create a new volunteer welcome center with multimedia content. Kanbe’s mission is to build a more inclusive food system by transforming food loss into food access. Media Arts and Production students Hayden Spratlin, Olivia Boone, Ella Brown, Keanen Inthavongsa and Winnie Fiss are leading the project.

Did you know that in addition to an academic advisor, students are assigned to a financial aid counselor? Your financial aid counselor can answer questions about financial aid and scholarships, provide counseling on the types of aid available, and help you understand tuition and fees. Fall bills are due Sept. 15, so if you have questions about how aid is applied, now is a great time to get in touch with your counselor. You can find your counselor in Jayhawk GPS within “Your Success Team.” The Financial Aid and Scholarships office is located in the 1502 Building (1502 Iowa St.).
Attention Seniors! Do you plan to graduate in December or May? If so, please complete an Application for Graduation in Enroll & Pay. You can choose your diploma delivery option at that time as well. The deadline to apply for fall graduation is Nov. 1.

Dow Jones News Fund’s internship application to open on Sept. 16. College sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students will be able to apply for paid summer internships in audience engagement, data journalism, digital media, business reporting and multiplatform editing.

Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman is leading a project to gauge if ethics disclosures influence how readers perceive the credibility of journalism. The research poses the question, if journalists are more open about what they're doing and how they're doing it, will that increase trust from readers? Appelman and Kirstie Hetting of California Lutheran University have received grant funding from the Arthur W. Page Center at Pennsylvania State University to conduct the study "Transparency effects: Audience perceptions of journalists' ethics training disclosure.

Professor of the Practice Pat Gaston is moderating the panel discussion “Lab Leaks, Pandemics and Us,” at the 13th annual Kansas Book Festival which will take place at Washburn University on Saturday, Sept. 28. The 2024 Festival features a lineup of 50 authors that includes NYTimes Bestsellers and winners of national book awards. The Kansas Book Festival is for all ages and interests, and all events are free.
Annalise Baines (j’23, Ph.D.) and Professor Hyunjin Seo are co-authors of a research paper, “COVID-19 Pandemic and Women Transitioning from Incarceration: A Study of Online Health Information Seeking among Underserved and Marginalized Women,” which has been accepted for publication in Feminist Media Studies.
Professor of the Practice Pat Gaston and Professor Hyunjin Seo are panelists in the panel, “Civic Engagement 101: Misinformation & Disinformation in the Media.” The Civic Engagement 101 series is sponsored by Kansas Public Radio and is Thursday, Sept. 12 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library. Recordings of the series will be uploaded to the library’s YouTube page.
If you are interested in joining the media representation research group led by Assistant Professor Steve Bien-Aimé, please email him at bienaime@ku.edu. In this group, we will utilize various qualitative, quantitative and critical approaches to analyze the construction and dissemination of identities through all forms of mass media.
Professor of the Practice Pat Gaston is serving on the KCUR Community Advisory Board. KCUR is Kansas City’s NPR member station that serves the public by reporting on and sharing information about local governments, politics, education, health care, arts and culture through the voices of the people living those stories.

Career Fair set for Oct. 17: Close to 30 organizations are expected to attend the Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair, connecting with students exploring internship and job opportunities on Thursday, Oct. 17. The event, scheduled for 10 a.m.-3 p.m., is open to all majors and concentrations. In addition to learning more about career options, students will have access to a professional photographer who will take portraits from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and a breakout room for resume reviews. As of Aug. 30, the following organizations have committed to the fair:
