Spotlight: Neuro-oncology program offers comprehensive, coordinated care for brain and spinal cord tumors
|
|
|
The neuro-oncology program at Children’s Minnesota treats more kids and teens with brain and spinal cord tumors than any other health care system in the region. The neuro-oncology team provides diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for all types of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors.
Four neuro-oncologists and three neurosurgeons make up the team. They are:
|
- Anne Bendel, MD, pediatric neuro-oncologist, Harper Family Foundation Endowed Chair of Novel Therapies and Cancer Research, and research director of the neuro-oncology program
- Margaret Shatara, MD, pediatric neuro-oncologist
- Maggie Skrypek, MD, pediatric neuro-oncologist and program director of the neuro-oncology program
-
Russell Wolters, MD, pediatric neuro-oncologist and solid tumor specialist
- Amy Bruzek, MD, pediatric neurosurgeon
-
Kyle Halvorson, MD, pediatric neurosurgeon
- Meysam Kebriaei, MD, pediatric neurosurgeon and medical director of the neurosurgery program
|
| |
The care team also includes pediatric neuro-oncology and neurosurgery nurse practitioners and physician assistants, radiation oncologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, and others. This coordinated care is tailored to meet each child's unique needs.
“We have the expertise to manage complex cases effectively, and importantly, we emphasize creating a supportive environment for both patients and their families. We address the emotional, psychological, and logistical challenges that accompany such a challenging diagnosis,” said Dr. Shatara, who most recently joined the neuro-oncology program in September 2024.
Additionally, the cancer and blood disorders research program at the Children’s Minnesota Research Institute participates in more than 100 active research studies, giving patients access to the most advanced treatments; 90% of eligible patients participate in clinical trials.

Children’s Minnesota offers more than 70 clinical practice guidelines in a wide range of pediatric specialties to assist health care providers with real-time decision making. They are free and available for anyone to use.
The clinical guidelines are designed for general use with most patients; each clinician should use their own independent judgment to meet the needs of each individual patient. Guidelines are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
