Film Screening of Ava DuVernay's 13th on President's Day, Monday, February 20th (President's Day)

Join the Department of Black Studies and the Black Cultural Affairs Board at PSU for a screening of the documentary 13th. This film, by the director of the film Selma, Ava Duvernay, refers to the Thirteenth Amendment of the U.S.  Constitution. The film examines the U.S. prison system and its relationship to the nation's systemic pattern of  racial inequality. The film includes inteviews with Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, activist and author Angela Davis, former mayor of New York David Dinkins, formerly incarcerated men and women, and more. This event is free and open to the public. 
Refreshments will be served.
Black Bag Speaker Series: Black Women and Leadership in Portland, Oregon
Wednesday, February 22, 2017, 12:00-1:30pm
Our panelists for this event are: Joanne Hardesty, Director of the NAACP Portland Chapter; Renee Mitchell, educator, author and playwright; the Honorable Adrienne Nelson, Multnomah County Judge; and Ebony Oldham, graduate student in the School of Education at PSU and Black Lives Matter Activist.
This event will be held in Parsons Gallery, 2nd floor of the College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) at Portland State. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Black Studies, the Office of Global Diversity & Inclusion, and the Office of Academic Affairs. Lunch will be provided.
Books for Inmates
Last year the Black Studies Department received a request for books from an inmate and responded by sending a large box of books. Since then, we have received a number of requests for books from inmates at different correctional institutions in Oregon. We need your help. If you have gently used classics or books with recent publication dates that focus on African American, African, and Caribbean/Latin American issues, please feel free to drop them off at our office, 1633 SW Park Avenue, Parkmill Building, Room 150.
Unconscious Bias Symposium
The office of Global Diversity and Inclusion is covering the registration for 20 students to attend this year's Unconscious Bias Symposium (UBS 2017) hosted at PSU on Friday, March 3rd and Saturday, March 4th. Registration closes February 24th. This year's theme is gender bias and intersectionality of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender variance/nonconformity, and disabilities. Olive Bukuru, one of our PSU students minoring in Black Studies is hoping to travel to study abroad in Iringa,Tanzania this fall. She is raising money for orphans living in Burundi and Tanzania. Black Bag Series Guest Speaker: Dr. Sarah Haley, author of No Mercy Here: Gender, Punishment, and the Making of Jim Crow Modernity
Join the Department of Black Studies on Thursday, March 2, in SMSU 338 at 12noon as we welcome Dr. Sarah Haley, assistant professor of gender and African American Studies at UCLA. Dr. Haley's book is described by University of North Carolina Press as:

"A landmark history of black women’s imprisonment in the South, this book recovers stories of the captivity and punishment of black women to demonstrate how the system of incarceration was crucial to organizing the logics of gender and race, and constructing Jim Crow modernity." 
Special Note: A reading group led by Dr. Derrais Carter will be provided copies of the book and will participate in meetings to discuss the book prior to Dr. Haley's visit. Please contact Dr. Carter if you are interested in participating at derrais@pdx.edu
