Spotlight on ... The Relevance of Chaos Theory to Graduate Student Career Development
Yes, you read that correctly. Grad student career development is strikingly similar to the core principles of chaos theory (complexity, change, chance, and connectivity). Or as mathematician Edward Lorenz summarizes the theory: "When the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future."
Said simply, career decisions are inextricably linked with other aspects of one's life, and those things are continually changing and sometimes difficult to predict. Check out this article for ways to manage the (often chaotic!) reality of career development in grad school.

FAQ of the Month
I’m finding it hard to stay motivated as the semester draws to a close. Any tips?
That's understandable -- many people feel more distracted as the semester winds down. Here are four of our favorite tips for finishing strong:
Understand your why. Sometimes it's not so much the what or the how that matters, but the why -- the purpose behind what you're doing. Thinking about your end goal may give you the boost you need to stay on track.
Prioritize, don't multi-task. Dedicate yourself to the task at hand. You'll be more effective than if you try to split your attention between several different things.
Break it down. Related to task prioritization, write down the three things you MUST accomplish today. Do those first, and then go from there. Give yourself a small reward for tackling your daily list of three, e.g., a coffee treat, a break for some fresh air.
Change your environment. Go beyond a simple office redecoration and think about things like task association and contextual clues. Here’s a look at the psychology behind why environmental changes are effective (or not!).
