Daniel Bravo Practices Respectful, Inclusive Service
A traveler sent in this recognition to thank TSA agent Daniel Bravo (he/him) for his exceptional customer service skills:
“After going through security, the TSA scanning machine indicated that I needed a pat down. I am gender non-conforming and, instead of assuming my gender, Daniel asked me very respectfully who I would like to perform the pat down – his female colleague or him.
I realized he wasn’t sure of my gender. Smiling under my mask, I said, ‘Nicely done. I appreciate you not assuming.’ He replied kindly, ‘We just need to use our words.’
Please give him my sincere appreciation in front of his colleagues. This experience really made me feel respected and seen. Excellent training and perfect delivery.”
Daniel was honored at the PDX People Customer Service Awards, where we recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary. PDX and Its Iconic Carpet: Reunited (and It Feels So Good)
This Valentine's Day, we love that everyone loves our old carpet...and more than a few of us have the shoe selfies to prove it. If you work at the airport, you can probably spot the carpet’s distinctive pattern from across the room, whether it's on socks, a keychain or a t-shirt.
And so, we have a little good news: When the expansive, light-filled main terminal opens in 2024, you'll find PDX's iconic carpet in the pre-security “meet and greet” areas outside the security exits, along with a few other surprise locations we’ll share along the way.
Of course, the current carpet will remain in the concourses. And the areas of the main terminal that visitors travel through will have gray terrazzo floors – a smoother surface that’s easier for wheelchairs, assistive devices and roller bags to navigate. Want more scoop on carpet plans? Check out the article.
[Hot tip: If travelers just can’t wait until 2024, there’s a great place to direct them right now – the "secret listening room" in the back of Tender Loving Empire on Concourse E, near Gate E5. It’s only a secret if you don’t know about it; everyone is welcome!]
Great Customer Service Wins Every Time!
If you've worked at PDX for a few years, these special tickets might look familiar.
Scratch and win tickets are part of the PDX People recognition program – a way for managers to instantly recognize and reward employees who exceed our PDX People core values. Managers will receive a supply of tickets starting this week and will distribute them as they spot employees providing exceptional customer service.
These tickets, along with our other recognition initiatives – the quarterly Customer Service Awards, PDX People appreciation events in September and our annual Excellence in Service Awards – are all part of celebrating individuals who make our airport an exceptional place for travelers and employees alike.
Only Airportle Can Get You From PDX to BOS in Just Minutes!
Over Wordle and ready for a new challenge? Think you know a thing or two about International Air Transport Association (IATA) codes? Try your hand at Airportle! [Sure, it's a promotion for Scott's Cheap Flights, but it's also fun...especially for those with airport knowledge.]
Like Wordle, it's a daily game that you play online. Every 24 hours there's a new airport IATA code, and it's up to you to figure it out in six tries. After each guess, the color of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the three-letter code. If you have the right letter in the right spot, it shows up green. A correct letter in the wrong spot shows up yellow. A letter that isn't in the code in any spot shows up gray.
Challenge your co-workers, share your Airportle score and win some bragging rights!
Alaska Airlines Unveils Major Investment to Expand and Remodel PDX Lounge
Alaska Airlines has targeted $1.5 million for PDX lounge upgrades in 2022, eventually paving the way for a completely new space in 2025-26. At PDX, expect the lounge to grow by 1,000 square feet, with an enclosed patio area that extends into Concourse C. Work will begin this spring and is scheduled to be complete this summer. The current lounge will remain open to Alaska travelers throughout the renovation. Additionally, Alaska will add a temporary “express lounge” on the new Concourse B. The mini-lounge is scheduled to open this summer near Gate B2. In 2025-26, an all-new lounge will open that's expected to be more than 10,000 square feet, giving guests a lot more elbow room. Read the press release to learn more about the upgrades.
PDX in Pictures
You never know who you'll see at PDX...or what delightful fun they might be sharing! Alaska Airlines employee Kris Brugman was recently spotted handing out treats and thank yous to team members while wearing some festive accessories. If you have a photo of life around PDX, email it to PDX People Communications – we might use it in a future PDX in Pictures.
