NCFDD Faculty Success Program
Applications open for summer program!
The UMKC Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) is pleased to be able to sponsor three full-time faculty members to participate in the NCFDD Faculty Success Program during the Summer 2024. This 10-week intensive mentoring experience is offered online and is designed to help faculty members increase scholarly productivity, manage time effectively, and maximize work-life balance. For additional information about the program, you can visit NCFDD Faculty Success Program.
Participants in the Faculty Success Program are expected to: be self-directed and open to feedback; participate in weekly online trainings and small group support and accountability calls; and complete weekly homework tasks guided by their coach, among other activities.
Following completion of the program, sponsored faculty will submit a brief report to the CAFE office that reflects on the overall effectiveness of the program, the extent to which their goals were met, suggestions for ways the program could be improved, and descriptions of lessons or effective practices that should be considered at UMKC. Alumni of the program also may be asked to share their experience with their peers.
UMKC Participant Testimonials: “I found the FSP beneficial in different ways. First, it helped me to realize how various barriers (external, psychological, etc.) can impact my writing and research productivity and what are the best strategies to deal with those barriers. Second, it allowed me to realize faculties should have different mentors for different topics or issues, how to find them, and how to ask them for advice. Third, it allows me to realize how to maintain the work/life balance and include various goals such as research and personal goals with no accountability.”
- Zahra Niroobakhsh
“I found the FSP program to be incredibly valuable. I solidified my understanding of strategic planning through it and applied the art to my own life. This was supported through goal setting, accountability, and instruction on how to tailor my time for my goals and strategy. I also liked the space and opportunity to take stock of my past and forecast my future in academia. My personal teaching philosophy is to be bold enough to make mistakes, and that culture of growth was underscored well in the FSP program, making it a safe place for me to learn and grow. I recommend the FSP program to any faculty member, but especially those who have traveled early academia and met, head-on, the crossroads of interest, intent and expectations”
- Professor Julie Sutton

Entrepreneurship Innovation Grants
To expand entrepreneurship opportunities across UMKC, the “Entrepreneurship Innovation Grants” (EIG) program was launched in 2021 with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. With continued support from the Foundation, we are proud to again provide new opportunities for funding for technology commercialization and cross-campus entrepreneurship initiatives. Our comprehensive view of entrepreneurship promotes growth mindset, innovation, new venture creation, social impact, self-employment, and exploration of market viability for technologies.
For the 2024 EIG funding period, up to $500,000 will be allocated. We seek diversity in the nature and scope of proposals from faculty or staff in academic or other units, centers, or institutes. There are two grant categories for the 2024 grant period - Technology Commercialization and Program and Professional Development.
The team will be hosting 2 information sessions via Zoom. Click link to join. Each information session will have a short presentation and an opportunity to ask questions.
The application period is now open. Proposals must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. on March 15, 2024. More information and an application form are available on the EIG program website.
