Guest Lectures-US Embassy

Does this count as Study? It does this week. The first week of the semester included two evening lectures/talks with our good friends from the US Embassy in Luxembourg. Consul Jackie Meeker and Regional Security Officer Martin Juenge spoke to students about how to travel safely, how to keep up with COVID information, how not to get thrown in jail (just kidding), and the services that the Embassy can and cannot offer to US citizens. They also covered issues related to absentee voting, which is of course crucial with the upcoming general election in November.

MUDEC was honored to host US Ambassador J. Randolph Evans for his first visit to the Château. With experience going back to his time as General Counsel to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who had family roots in Luxembourg, Ambassador Evans covered a wide range of topics, including how the impeachment process works and how the visit by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi came to be last December for the 75th Anniverary of the Battle of the Bulge.
On a more personal note, Ambassador Evans shared his experiences and views on the value of diversity and the insidious impact of racism. Afterwards, he stayed for dinner with the students to cap off a successful first visit to MUDEC.

Sebastian Pratt
Sebastian Pratt-Co-Chair
My name is Sebastian Pratt and I'm a 3rd year double major in Music Composition and Political Science with a double minor in Japanese and Poetry from Pittsburgh, PA. I ended up in the Lux program through a series of very strange and last-minute events, but I'm so glad to be here! Back in Oxford, I'm an RA and an active member of NRHH and have been to both CAACURH and NACURH. I'm also the secretary for a new org on campus called "Colored Lens" which discusses queer-centric media. Since this semester is remote for orgs in Oxford, I still get to be a part of my club via Zoom, although the 6 hour time difference isn't very polite. I've only been here a week and already I cannot wait to come back!

Kelly Horvath

Kelly Horvath-Secretary/Treasurer

Hi! I’m Kelly Horvath, and I’m an Architecture and French double major. I’ve always loved to travel and have known about MUDEC since I chose Miami in 2018. I really fell in love with studying abroad when I did the program in the Dijon, France with Miami in 2019. Since then, I knew I had to be a part of this experience if it ran. Now, I honestly still can’t believe we are even here. This past summer I was one of few who were able to do research through the Undergraduate Summer Scholars program. I completed my project with the French Department, specifically Professor Anna Klosowska, and published a website about it. If you have a moment and any interest in 16th century French Renaissance literature and architecture, I highly recommend it. Outside of the academic world, I love to cook, read, paint, and watch Disney classics in French.

Corrine McClintock
Corrine McClintock-Semester Projects and Communication
Hi! My name is Corrine McClintock and I am a sophomore pursuing a major in Marketing and a minor in Spanish. I am from a small town near Cleveland, Ohio, and this is my first time traveling to Europe! I love animals (especially dogs), and some of my favorite hobbies include swimming and watching Netflix shows. Although this semester is a little untraditional and unpredictable, I am so excited to be a member of SFC and to be involved in creating unique experiences for everyone here!

Odds and Ends
And the Winner is...
Not exactly pizza, but Domino delivered once again. Lost in the arrival of the students last week was recognition of our first quiz winner of the semester from the August 17 newsletter. Former MUDEC Professor Brian Domino correctly identified the new areas of the Château (for all the pictures you'll have to go back to the newsletter itself):
  • Rooms 1 and 2 are on the second floor, where the Dean's apartment was.
  • Room 3 is the former faculty lounge.
  • Rooms 4 and 5 are the library. Specifically, 4 is the main part of the library and runs along the length of the Grand Hall, whereas 5 is the architecture studio
Brian will not win a year's supply of turtle wax, nor Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco treat, but he will be appropriately rewarded for proving that he reads this newsletter.

And the Winners are...
And y'all thought that this was a real quiz! It was actually a market survey to see whose parents read the newsletter... Gracie Limauro, Nick Kearstead, and Julia Daniels, you win! Stop by Andy's office to claim your prizes.
