June 2020
News That Rocks
Senior Memory - Bohemian Rhapsody at Best of Season February 2019

Hello June!

We've been writing, recording, and workin' out those pandemic blues together.  And it's time for our dear seniors to graduate.  Yep it's June alright.  Read all the latest right here!

Performance Program has a *Record* May

Ok bad pun. :).  BUT, sometimes there really is a silver lining in the midst of a storm.  The reality in the music world, pandemic or not, is that many artists do their own recordings (and marketing and booking and and and) so, as a first step, we thought it was the perfect time to get our students learning how to record their parts from home and learn some of the tools of the trade.  They've been busy and now we're mixing their work and will be getting that out for you to hear.  It's pretty cool and we're pretty proud of what they've been able to accomplish in such a short time in the midst of all they are dealing with right now.  What should we name this set we wonder?  Pandemica?   Quarantinia?  Send us your thoughts!

Yes!  There Will be Summer 2020 at School of Rock!

We have been working on The Plan for Summer 2020 and want to keep you in the loop.  Safety is our number one concern and we are working with a team of advisors to ensure we are covering all the bases, have proper barriers and protocols in place etc. to keep the rock rolling and our students and staff safe.  As things open up, we will be offering options for students both online and in house. We realize that some will be more comfortable than others and so will offer options to accomodate all concerns.  We are not sure of the exact dates of our re-opening just yet and will keep you posted.  An email will go out to parents shortly with more details.

We Hope You Had the Time of Your Life

June is always a hard one when we have to send off our beloved seniors.  This year, of course, it's especially poignant as we have not been able to spend these last months together in person.  But rest assured, your contributions and grit and sheer wonderfulness will not be forgotten.  We hope you had the time of your life here with us and that you will visit often.  Best of luck to our dear seniors - may all your dreams come true.

Isabel Roth

What are you doing post-graduation?
Post graduation I’m taking a gap year. I’m working on songwriting, recording and producing my own EP. I plan on going to school the next year and minoring in music production.

What is your favorite specific memory of your time here at School of Rock?
My favorite SOR memory would have to be playing Bohemian Rhapsody at Best of Season last year. I will never forget that. It was the most amazing bonding experience I’ve ever had. The band members felt like a true family after that.

What advice do you give to students coming up through the program?
My advice to upcoming SOR students would be to always believe in your abilities. Don’t sell yourself short. Try a new instrument, a new song, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes at first. Always strive for better. You can be as good as you want to be.

What lessons will you take with you as you leave SOR?One major lesson I will take from School of Rock is that you really can do anything you put your mind to. When I joined, I didn’t want to sing. But a former teacher somehow convinced me to do it, and it was the best thing I’ve ever had the opportunity to do. I will always be thankful for the community at SOR. It truly made the past 4 years the happiest of my life.

Lillian Schupp

What are you doing post-graduation?
I will be attending Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in the fall to study International Studies.

What is your favorite specific memory of your time here at School of Rock?
My favorite memory at School of Rock has to be performing Bohemian Rhapsody with Olivia and Isabel, especially at Best of Season 2019. They are two of the most incredible women I know and every time we sing together it feels right.

What advice do you give to students coming up through the program?
To students going through the program right now, I would advise you to walk into every rehearsal with a good attitude (willingness to learn, reception to guidance from both your directors and the Vets in your shows, etc.)

What lessons will you take with you as you leave SOR?
The biggest lesson that I will take away from my four years at School of Rock Silver Spring is that practice does not make perfect if you are only half-practicing.

Cameron Luchie

What are you doing post-graduation?
I will be attending Montgomery College and studying Psychology and Music.
What is your favorite specific memory of your time here at School of Rock?
I really enjoyed interning for the School of Rock summer camp. It was motivational, inspirational, and educational. I was able to work with some amazing kids eager to learn about music. It took me back to my first year at the SOR Camp.

What advice do you give to students coming up through the program?
Keep at it, work hard, and never forget that music is the INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE!!

What lessons will you take with you as you leave SOR?
That you never stop learning.
