| 📚 Literacy Together is wrapping up summer on a high note! 🎉
| |
We’ve had fun events, exciting plans in the works, and the little-big things that fill our days with joy and purpose—like adorable thank-you notes, and inspiring student testimonials ✨. And guess what? We’re hiring an ESOL Instructor! 📝👩🏫
| |
Originally from Hidalgo, Mexico, Maria has called the U.S. home for 26 years. She's currently enrolled in a group ESOL class in Swannanoa and rarely misses a session. For her, those two hours each week are a cherished time to focus on building her English skills.
Maria shares that her teacher, Cindy, is incredibly patient —and it's made a real difference. With Cindy's support, Maria feels more confident communicating with others and is forming new connections in her community.
One of her proudest recent moments? Picking up the newspaper at work, she realized she could read the news in English! She's also incredibly proud of her kids, who all graduated from high school.
This kind of transformation is what Literacy Together is all about—and it's possible, in part, due to the generous support of the Pisgah Investments Foundation, which funds our group classes, as well as The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina (CFWNC). Their grant helps us offer ESOL programming for youth and adults in Black Mountain and Swannanoa.
Together, we're building stronger communities—one lesson at a time! 🤗

A special shoutout to our very own Marshall Fisher —ESOL tutor, board member, and now runner-up spelling superstar! 👏 He and Jessica McLean, Read to Succeed Co-Executive Director, did an incredible job at spelling and at having fun!

Our ESOL Program has a waiting list of over 70 people, some of whom have been waiting months for a tutor! We host two monthly orientation meetings. This month, we welcomed participants from Nigeria, China, New York City, Atlanta, and Buncombe County! This is what one participant said after the meeting:
| |
I learned how high the statistics were for those who are unable to pay for basic needs let alone education. I was able to revisit how fortunate I am and to not take anything for granted. I was able to feel the depth of appreciation for those who are courageous enough to ask for help and for those who are compassionate enough to offer support.

| Upcoming Online Orientation Meetings
Tuesday, September 9th, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Thursday, September 11th, 10:00 am - 11:00 am
