KBOR Approves Changes to KU Departments |
Last week, the Kansas Board of Regents approved departmental changes in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and School of Engineering.
|
-
The College has combined the departments of Geography & Atmospheric Science and Geology and the Environmental Studies Program into a single new academic unit: the Department of Earth, Energy & Environment. By bringing these disciplines together, KU is creating a more collaborative approach to addressing critical challenges such as energy resource development, water and resource management, and climate resilience. The disciplinary rigor, academic excellence and distinct identities that have defined each program will continue to shape the department’s future.
-
In the School of Engineering, the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering has been renamed the Department of Chemical & Energy Engineering. The department’s two degree programs — chemical engineering and petroleum engineering — will remain unchanged. The new name reflects the department’s growing role in energy research and education and its connection to one of the School of Engineering’s broader strategic priorities. Energy is a school-level focus that brings together faculty and students from across multiple engineering disciplines, including chemical, petroleum, electrical, mechanical, civil and environmental engineering.

The changes are effective immediately.

Movetober to Encourage Moving in Many Forms |
Ready, set, move! Starting next week, KU Employee Wellness will launch Movetober, a four-week movement challenge for KU employees, running from Oct. 5 through Nov. 1.
The initiative, which had 245 participants clocking more than 541,700 minutes of movement in its inaugural year, has a few changes for 2026. Participants can choose a movement pathway that is meaningful to them, set a weekly target measured in minutes and build momentum toward that goal. Employees can participate as individuals or in teams of three to six colleagues.
The movement pathways include:
|
- Move More to increase the amount of movement in a week.
- Move Often to make movement a regular part of a daily routine.
- Move Strong to focus on strength, resistance training or balance.
-
Move Outside to increase the time spent moving outdoors.
- Move Together to have more social, supportive and community-focused movement.
|
After picking a pathway and target, participants must log the previous week’s minutes by noon Monday to be entered for random weekly prize drawings. Movetober also offers in-person and virtual opportunities to connect around weekly themes, which Campus Insider will share throughout October.
To register and learn more, visit the Movetober website.
