The November EditionNovember 6, 2024
Welcome to the November Edition of the Comfort Connection!

November is Fall Prevention Month, so in recognition of that, we've gathered resources to help you (and your loved ones) learn more about Preventing Falls.
Slips, trips, falls. No matter what you call them, stumbles can happen to anyone.

Yet they become more and more common as we get older. Falls remain the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among Canadian seniors with approximately 25% of individuals aged 65 and older falling every year. Most falls occur in people over 74 years old. This makes falls a major health concern for older Canadians.

Monthly Spotlight: Fall Prevention Month

Anyone can fall. But as we age, our risk of falling becomes greater. That's the bad news. The good news is that falls can be prevented. The first step to avoiding falls is to understand what causes them. For example, poor balance, decreased muscle and bone strength, reduced vision or hearing, and unsafe conditions in and around your home can increase your chance of falling. Staying safe and on your feet is a matter of taking some steps to protect yourself.

You can prevent falls by making the needed adjustments to your home and lifestyle, and by making sure you eat well, stay fit, and use whatever devices will facilitate your daily life while keeping you safe. Your independence and well-being are at stake. Take action!

Recipe of the Month: Overnight Oats

When someone asks me for an easy, healthy breakfast idea, this overnight oats recipe is the first thing I suggest. It’s perfect for busy mornings, as you can make individual servings ahead of time and take them on the go. It’s also satisfying enough to keep you full till lunch, made with simple ingredients like oats, chia seeds, and (optional) yogurt. But best of all, it’s fun.

What we have been up to...

On Thursday, October 31st, Comforts of Home - Care took part in the St. James Spooktacular Trick or Treat event where families with little ones were invited to Trick or Treat in the businesses along Portage Avenue. It was such a delight to see all the little ones in Costume who came to visit us.

Joke of the Month

The old lady handed her bank card to a teller and said, "I would like to withdraw $10.." The teller told her, "For withdraw less than $100 please use the ATM."
The old lady wanted to know why...
The teller returned her bank card and irritably told her, "These are the rules. Please leave, if there is nothing else I can help you with. There is a line of customers behind you."
The old lady remained silent for a few seconds, then handed the card back to the teller and said, "Please help me withdraw all the money I have."
The teller was astonished when she checked the account balance. She nodded her head, leaned down and respectfully told her, you have $300,000 in your account. But the bank doesn't have that much cash currently. Could you make an appointment and come back tomorrow?
The old lady then asked how much she could withdraw immediately!
The teller told her: any amount up to $3000
"Well, please let me have $3000 now"
The teller then handed it to her very kindly and respectfully..
The old lady put $10 in her purse and asked the teller to deposit $2,990 back into her account!!
Moral of the Story.......
Don't be difficult with old people, they spend a lifetime learning these skills!
