Anjelica Gangaram, PhD, joined GHP on September 1 as a postdoctoral research fellow working with Jessica Cohen. Anjelica holds a PhD in health services organization and policy (cognate: economics) from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, as well as a BA in biochemistry, a BA in economics, and an MA in economics from Hunter College, City University of New York. She is a health economist, and her research interests include health care policy evaluation, maternal and child health, and health disparities. When not working, you can find her fussing over her house plants and listening to history podcasts. Anjelica can be reached via email at agangaram@hsph.harvard.edu.

Audun Brendbekken joined GHP on September 1 as a visiting graduate student working with Stéphane Verguet. Audun is a PhD fellow supervised by Ole Norheim at the Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting (BCEPS), University of Bergen. He holds a medical degree from the University of Bergen and a bachelor’s in economics from the Norwegian School of Economics. His research focuses on high-cost therapies and priority-setting in Norway, particularly concerning orphan drugs for rare diseases. Audun can be reached via email at abrendbekken@hsph.harvard.edu.

Harvard China Health Partnership Holds Health Policy and System Training Course in China

This summer, the Harvard China Health Partnership (HCHP) hosted the inaugural course in its Health Policy and Systems Training Series in Chengdu, China. Public health scholars from over ten Chinese universities participated in this four-day course from July 8 to 11, 2024. The training delved into technical, political, and ethical aspects of health system design and incorporated both theoretical frameworks and international case studies. Course instructors included GHP professors Winnie Yip, William Hsiao, and Michael Reich. To learn more, check out HCHP’s blog post.

Esias Bedingar Joins World Health Organization's Global Action for Measurement of Adolescent Health Advisory Group
Esias Bedingar, PhD student in population health sciences, was recently selected to join WHO's Global Action for Measurement of Adolescent Health (GAMA) Advisory Group! As a part of this 20-member group, Esias will help advise WHO and UN H6+ partners on research priorities, strategies to improve adolescent health measurement, the delivery of products defined in the GAMA work plan, and more. Congratulations, Esias!

Annual Accounts Payable (AP) Refresher Training
The GHP AP team will present their annual AP refresher training on Wednesday, September 25, at 1:30 pm! This refresher will provide guidance and insight around GHP’s AP processes, highlight best practices, and review both the Concur and Buy2Pay (B2P) systems. The AP team will also be able to answer any AP-related questions you may have.

Considered part of the spring semester, WinterSession is a special term at the Harvard Chan School that runs for three weeks each January. GHP’s WinterSession travel courses offer graduate students the unique opportunity to apply the academic frameworks and tools learned throughout the year in a dynamic and professional environment by simulating the work they may engage in after graduation. Refining Nutrient Supplementation Strategies in Pregnancy in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

As part of the Nutrition and Global Health Seminar Series, Wafaie Fawzi and Christopher Sudfeld will explore the latest evidence on nutrient supplementation strategies in pregnancy in low- and middle-income country settings. Highlights of the presentation will include recent findings from trials of calcium supplementation for the prevention of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and preterm birth in addition to new research on refining global prenatal iron and multiple micronutrient supplementation strategies.

This prospective study of arbovirus infection in pregnant women in north-central Nigeria sought to characterize the prevalence of acute arbovirus infection and determine the impact on pregnancy and infant outcomes.

2025–2026 HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship
The HBNU Fogarty Global Health Training Program provides one-year mentored research fellowship opportunities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for PhD candidates, medical students, and postdoctoral candidates from the U.S. and LMICs. The program supports research in areas of interest including HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases, mental health, maternal and child health and nutrition, and more. 2025–2026 Takemi Program in International Health Fellowship
The Takemi Program recruits a small group of mid-career researchers and professionals to spend an academic year at the Harvard Chan School each year. The Takemi Program provides participants with the space, time, and flexibility to enhance their capacity for research and leadership, by providing two key resources: the weekly Takemi seminar series and expert faculty members. FXB Center Child Protection Certificate Program
The FXB Center for Health & Human Rights at Harvard University is now accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Child Protection Certificate cohort. This interdisciplinary program incorporates ongoing child protection research and practice grounded in field-based realities and takes into account the expertise of UNICEF, a University-wide faculty steering committee, and external child protection experts. Harvard graduate students across all schools and degree programs may apply, but admission is limited to 30 individuals. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but interested students are advised to apply early. Visit the certificate program website to learn more and apply.
