SDRI was proud to participate at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) 83rd Scientific Sessions in San Diego, CA. The ADA Scientific Sessions unveiled cutting-edge research, treatment recommendations, and advances toward a cure for diabetes. Diabetes affects more than 37 million children and adults in the United States and 537 million around the world. The global personal and economic costs are staggering, and addressing this crisis is the core purpose of ADA's Scientific Sessions.

SDRI was awarded a $1.7 million grant from Eli Lilly Company for a community-based, culturally-sensitive lifestyle therapy research study to reduce obesity and type 2 diabetes burden in the LatinX population. This study will evaluate the clinical efficacy (body weight and blood sugar control) and acceptance of a novel, culturally-sensitive lifestyle intervention delivered by bilingual community health workers to LatinX adults with obesity and diabetes in Santa Barbara.
-
SDRI was awarded a NIH funded grant to evaluate the effect of moderate weight loss on sleep duration and quality in Latinos with obesity. Latinos in the U.S. are disproportionately burdened by obesity, which is a major cause of cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in this population. Sleep and circadian disruption are independent risk factors for the development of obesity and metabolic diseases.
-
SDRI was awarded, for a second year, a NIH funded pilot and feasibility grant to develop and test a culturally tailored, dietary-lifestyle behavioral intervention that supports the increased consumption of plant-based foods and is implemented through community health workers to prevent excessive gestational weight gain and improve glycemic control in pregnant Latina women with type 2 diabetes.

SDRI's groundbreaking research in Diabetes in Pregnancy was published in Diabetes Care. The publication highlighted that currently there are no commercially available hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery systems customized to achieve pregnancy-specific glucose targets in the U.S. This study evaluated the feasibility of at-home use of a pregnancy-specific closed-loop insulin delivery system in pregnancies complicated by type 1 diabetes. Ten participants used the system, and the results revealed reductions in hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, or both, with 9 out of 10 participants reaching >70% of time in range for optimal blood glucose levels.
