Tips for Grads: Build your brand to stand out in a crowded job market

Career Development
Today, many students use online platforms to keep up with friends, follow celebrities and online fitness influencers, watch viral videos, and read about the latest news. But while students enjoy consuming content online, you could be missing valuable opportunities to create content to help you stand out in the job market.
Don Stanley, founder and CEO of 3Rhino Media and a Life Sciences Communication Faculty Associate, spoke to grad students in February about the importance of building a personal and meaningful brand online. Think of it as “extra interview” time, Stanley said. Creating your presence online shows you are truly passionate about what you do and can make you stand out as a candidate who is knowledgeable and looking for more than just a job out of grad school, but a career.
Here is Stanley’s roadmap to creating an online presence so you can become known by employers you want to work for.
  1. Clearly define yourself and your realistic, meaningful goals. Think about what you bring to the table. What are your vocational skills? Combine these skills with what is important to you.
  2. Define your niche audience. Research experts within the field you want to enter and start following them. Then define the audience you want to reach within that field.
  3. Create high quality content and become a thought leader. You can start creating high quality content by sharing and crediting the work of authors, podcasters, and video creators in your field.
