| Veterinarians can expect calls after recent reports of canine influenza A recent outbreak of canine influenza in the southeastern United States, with patient histories including participation in two dog shows in Florida and Georgia, prompted American Kennel Club (AKC) officials to issue an alert the first week of June to AKC members. News about the outbreak has now reached the national media, and veterinarians should be prepared to field questions about the disease from concerned clients. Read more...

| Tennessee DEA Office Gives Guidance for Reporting Theft or Loss Per Title 21, CFR, Section 1301.76(b), registrants must notify their local DEA office in writing of the theft or significant loss of CS within one business day of discovery. You may also satisfy the Board regulation to report by sending a copy to Dr Terry Grinder at terry.grinder@tn.gov.

| Update on TVMA's Legal Assistance Program At the 2017 MCVC, we introduced the concept of a legal assistance program for TVMA. This program was to be based on a program in California that allows VMA members to have access to lawyers familiar with problems common to veterinarians. Deloris Gaines and I had met with the executive director of the California VMA when we were at the AVMA meeting in San Antonio. We formulated our own program last fall and began to work with Irwin Venick, long time lawyer for TVMA, soon after that. Unfortunately, we hit a major snag this spring. Tennessee has some rather unique laws regarding an association's seeking legal advice for its members. Despite our protests and appeals, the Board of Professional Responsibility has ruled that we cannot initiate our program without employing multiple law firms. Based on the size and scope of our legal program and our current budget, that restriction seems unreasonable, and to date, it has not been something we have been able to overcome. We are investigating other ways to provide legal advice for our members when the needs are small and common to other veterinarians. At this time, legal insurance plans or more regular legal webinars may be in our future. I am sorry that our efforts have not been more productive. We will continue to work diligently to increase the benefits of membership in your association. If you have any ideas about new approaches for our legal assistance program, please let me know. Joe Ed Conn, DVM TVMA President

| Veterinarian Wellness Update
The demands of life in general, combined with the pressures of the veterinary profession, often times does not give us much time to take care of our own needs. But it is hard to be a good care giver if we don't put our own needs first. No one should feel guilty about this, being tired, stressed, having burnout or compassion fatigue will definitely adversely affect our performance at work. So take time if even in small increments to do things you enjoy whether it is just relaxing, reading a book, yoga, hiking or spending time with friends and family. Every small step you take towards helping yourself will become a positive step to more effectively helping your patients. For more information or ideas please visit our website at: tnvetwellness.org

Feedback on Topics for Webinars Requested TVMA is now providing complimentary webinars to all members, typically offered for one hour during weekday evenings. Continuing education credits are available for most topics for real time participants. Upcoming webinars include Financial Stability for Veterinarians, Part 2 and Liability Issues for Veterinarians. Topics already offered have included financial stability; wellness; regulatory requirements for sales tax, drug testing, and the veterinary feed directive for food animals including honeybees; and what veterinarians needs to know about estate planning for pets. We want to hear your feedback. Your help in answering 4 questions about the webinars will help us provide a better service to you. Click here to complete the survey by July 7. BTW--If you miss a webinar, you can access the recorded version on the TVMA website's member-only section.

| Prescription Mandates: Bad for Veterinarians and Their Patients Congress has once again introduced prescription mandate legislation, misleadingly called the “Fairness to Pet Owners Act” (H.R. 623). The AVMA opposes this legislation because it will require veterinarians to waste time on red tape instead of what’s most important: caring for patients. For more information on this bill and how you can help, click here.
