Momentum - a 36-month overview

To describe in a single word what we have been able to do in District 8 these past 36 months, nothing works better than the word, momentum. Let's take a look from South to North and see the great things in action and beginning to move forward.
Oakwood Park upgrades -  taking longer than expected, but still hopeful for the ribbon cutting long before Thanksgiving.
Trail Oriented Development Community Plan - one of the most unique and amazing things that thoughtfully occurred in East Nashville in the last three years.  The development of new neighborhoods and commercial spaces from Maplewood High School to Jere Baxter Middle School further establishes the necessary harness on momentum as we protect the green spaces along Ellington Parkway.
Creative Way and Inspiration Blvd - The entrance to Madison from the South is taking shape.  The temporarily named  "The Ellington" ( Briarville Townhomes ) is under construction and will bring the first roof-top decks to the area. A great idea because the views will be spectacular.
The Six 0 Nine is also under construction and the new marketing website is spot on. These are also owner-occupied townhomes with spectacular amenities and views.
Still under plans are the Diamond Gusset Jeans project on the corner and the Creative Way Villages providing leasable apartments across from Nossi College of Art, flats above a commercial space (restaurant), as well as and projected Green Building Certified Townhomes off Inspiration Blvd. ( This plan has changed slightly since initial approval and we will have meetings on it this autumn )  The project at Royal and Worth ( behind the Shell Station) of detached single family homes hope to start moving dirt before the autumn is over.
Momentum indeed for my request for a Traffic Light and crosswalks at Creative Way and Worth with speed control lighting and stripping off Ellington Parkway.
Due West Towers - Its hard to believe that we were just hoping that the place wouldn't sit empty for too long.  The new owner has several tenants in the towers and has recently leased the parking to  Skyline Medical Center for employee shuttles while they expand at the hospital. There are still big visions for this space and I will work with the owners to realize the full potential of that 52-acre site.
Let's pause there for a second and catch our breath and look at some pictures.

Momentum Doesn't Stop

Old Due West to become Skyline Ridge Drive. Music City Solar was an amazing opportunity for District 8 to participate in something bigger than ourselves and that energy created even more momentum. HCA's Skyline Medical has started their expansion to provide even more service to our area.  With this, an additional portion of the old landfill will be utilized for surface parking.  Ongoing talks are underway with HCA Foundation, Metro Parks and other Private Foundations and interests to secure funds to provide a restoration to the Bashaw Historic Cemetary and a Pocket Park at Skyline Ridge. Directly across from the Skyline Hospital entrance and new park is a residential and small commercial space idea that has had a positive response from the neighbors. Particularly to note is the willingness to for 808 Skyline Ridge to update the road all the way West to Dickerson Pike, complete with sidewalks to access a future bus stop.
The North Skyline Center seven-story Hampton Inn Suites and the Rock & Dough Pizza and Brewery should be open by the Summer of 2019.
YIMBY on Dickerson Pike near Old Hickory Blvd will bring us affordable leasing opportunities to balance mixed incomes along the Dickerson Pike corridor as we look for future commercial activity in the area. The Buffalo Trail Apartments should break ground by next spring if not before.
The long-awaited  House of Brews Coffee shop at 632 OHB has had trouble getting the right contractor for the driveway and parking lot.  As soon as you see that happening,  the clock starts ticking for an opening date! - This is exactly what happened to Sidekicks causing a delay in their opening but nobody remembers that because we love it soooo much it feels like has been there forever.  The townhomes next to them at the corner of North Marthona,  Hickory Trails should begin construction soon.
Deep breath, time for more photos.

The Madison Renaissance

There is no question in my mind that the true realization of any so-called Madison Renaissance must and will be based on her history as much as her future. As one of five councilmembers representing and responsible for shepherding this large potential, I look toward the heart of its past passions;  Music and Railroad for inspiration.
Kitty Wells and Johnny Wright, Hank Snow, Mother Maybelle, Johnny's love for Amqui Station, Star-Day King to Loretta Lynn's first home and more, music is Madison. When I hear that train whistle, I think of all the other folks in D8 that hear it too, or soon will. It ties us together and will continue to do so.
The last three years also brought us the Madison Town Center Vision Plan, the Commitment to Madison Station Blvd, the Madison Library Upgrades and all of that fueled the momentum toward the  Three-Part Madison Strategic Plan now found on the Madison Rivergate Chamber of Commerce website.

Historic Preservation

Our Story Continues

The momentum isn't stopping.  The discipline to work together to ensure that new development happens for us and not to us is something that we must keep working on.  Our Neighborhood Maintenance Overlays in our suburban heart are holding true.  I will not endorse the splitting up on our large residential lots from Gra-Mar to Madison.  We have more than enough opportunity still unrealized on Dickerson Pike and Gallatin Pike, Broadmoor and Ben Allen.  Not mention the Old Kmart and at Due West Towers. Over-development is not necessary for sustainable growth in District 8.
Infrastructure in D8 will be a big part of the next 12 months.  We should see the roads, sidewalks, library and park updates promised and already approved finished before the Summer of 2019. The newly annexed portions of D8 have seen the new streetlights go up and the trash carts will start delivery on Sep 10th - Trash and Recycling should all be underway by October 1, 2018
Great things are happening and being planned because great people have always lived here.  It has been my pleasure to represent you these past 36 months and I look forward to what is ahead.
