Successful Lab Supply Swap |
JHU’s second-ever lab supply swap was a great success! Special thanks to Diane Lanham in the Fisher Center for Environmental Infectious Diseases for co-hosting the event, and to the Doctors without Borders Student Chapter at JHU for assistance in inventorying items.
- The swap received donations from 18 labs across SOM and BSPH
- Nearly 75 people from 33 labs attended the swap to pick up items!
- Preliminary estimates indicate ~$50,000 worth of supplies were exchanged in the swap, ranging from consumables to glassware to small equipment

JHU Sustainability Wins in the Battle of Charles Street |
OCS teamed up with Loyola's Office of Sustainability to host a friendly competition between students at the Battle of Charles Street Lacrosse Game on February 14th. We had a table full of interns from both JHU and Loyola, plus the directors of each office. The students facilitated a trivia competition between Loyola and JHU students where participants put their sustainability knowledge to the test.
JHU was ultimately victorious (in both the trivia and the lacrosse game!) and we were glad to spend a beautiful day outside chatting about sustainability. We appreciate the Loyola Office of Sustainability and the JHU Athletics department for working with us on this wonderful collaboration and are already planning to take home another victory at next year’s game!

OCS Brings Sustainability to JHU Major Fair |
OCS engagement intern Kalista Fong coordinated participation at the JHU Major Fair, an event designed to help new students learn more information about majors at JHU.
| |
The OCS engagement interns identified how sustainability is connected to every major at Hopkins and shared this information with students at the Major Fair. It was a great chance to get students thinking about how sustainability fits into their academic studies in every discipline!

PhD Student Brings Attention to MD Bottle Bill |
MD/PhD candidate at the JHU School of Medicine and OCS Green Labs communication intern, Kaitlin Williams, has been working to bring attention to the Maryland Bottle Bill, which aims to increase recycling and reduce plastic waste. Kaitlin served a scientific panelist at a recent community panel discussion (left) and provided testimony to the Maryland House of Delegates (below right).
During her PhD research, Kaitlin discovered plastic-related compounds may worsen skin disease, and she hopes the bill will help combat plastic pollution in the state. Kaitlin's work appeared in the "Inside Hopkins" email digest this month! Read more about her research on plastics and skin disease here.

Lindi Shepard on Nature-Based Learning and Environmental Education |
| Lindi Shepard is a doctoral candidate at the Johns Hopkins School of Education whose research explores how social psychology mechanisms can impact the way people think about environmental issues. As a former teacher, Shepard is interested in understanding how people learn and teach about the natural world, and how teachers can collaborate with nature as a co-teacher.
Her work seeks answers to questions like: What tools need to be provided to teach about environmental issues like climate change, sustainability, and biodiversity? How can teachers incorporate their local ecosystems into lessons? How can lessons involve real world practices and applications?
