Students representing Good Morning Indian Country and The Indian Leader (Haskell) celebrated their award-winning work at the Indigenous Media Awards in Albuquerque, NM, on Aug. 15. The awards gala is one of the highlights of the Indigenous Media Conference.
GMIC took home top honors, earning first, second, and third place for Best Newscast in the student division.

Fall 2025 Student Success Series: Our first session, "College Hacks," is a must-have for any new incoming student or any student wanting to re-orient themselves to KU. We will talk about the ins and outs of college life, expectations, and resources on campus. Join us this Wednesday, August 27, from 4-5 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery, first floor Stauffer-Flint Hall.
Next week’s session, "Study Skills," is for any student who wants to explore how to facilitate their own learning best. Topics will range from learning what “learning” is, dispelling common learning myths, concrete study skills and insight into memory.

Jayhawk Academic Advising: Do you know your academic advisor’s name, role, and how to connect with them? Academic advisors assist students with academic, co-curricular and professional goal setting, major and career exploration, resource awareness and referrals, course selection, and personalized support. You can find your academic advisor in Jayhawk GPS within “Your Success Team.” From there, you can schedule an in-person or virtual appointment.
Need to add or swap classes? Students must now obtain written permission from the instructor to add or swap into their class. Requests are submitted through an online form. Please connect with your academic advisor for additional details.

Learn how to discuss controversial news stories and earn $50: The study will take place on the Lawrence campus and will take about two hours. To participate, you must be at least 18 years old and an undergrad at KU. If you’re interested, please fill out the survey, which should take about 10 minutes. Sign-ups accepted until Sept. 12, or until spots are filled. If you have already signed up but have not yet participated, please fill out the survey again with your fall availability.

Ad Club to host first meeting of semester: The club will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery. This meeting will introduce the club, discuss what students can expect this semester, and share upcoming dates. Everyone is welcome, and free pizza will be provided.

The University of Kansas has appointed Professor Hyunjin Seo as a University Distinguished Professor, the highest academic honor awarded to faculty members. The University Distinguished Professorship recognizes faculty who have demonstrated “a truly distinguished record of scholarship” and who are regarded as “exceptional instructors who exhibit an interest in the growth and success of students, colleagues, and institutions.” Read the full release.

Alum to share Deadline Hollywood social media experiences: Natalie Sitek, a 2017 JMC graduate, will be on campus on Thursday, Aug. 28, to talk about her role as a social media manager at Deadline Hollywood in Los Angeles. Students are welcome to visit with her at a meet-and-greet between 2-2:30 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery at Stauffer-Flint Hall.
Advertising professionals to speak at Spark KC: The KC Ad Club will host Spark KC on Friday, Sept. 19, at the KU Edwards campus, 12600 S. Quivira Road, Overland Park. Students interested in connecting with advertising professionals and receiving feedback on resumes or portfolios are encouraged to attend the event between 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Register here.
Dole Institute hosting kickoff event Aug. 26: Join the Dole Institute Student Advisory Board and guests Emily Bradbury (Executive Director of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association) and Eric Meyer (Editor and Publisher of the Marion County Record) on Aug. 26 at 5:30 p.m. for their annual fall semester kick-off event to discuss challenges faced by local journalists and the future of local journalism and enjoy some free BBQ & Dole Whip!

Dr. Jun Pei, who graduated in June from the JMC School PhD program, has accepted a position as Postdoctoral Associate at Rutgers University (New Jersey), School of Health Professions, Department of Health Informatics. His dissertation topic was health communication, research completed under the guidance of Dr. Mugur Geana.
Dr. Monique Luisi (PhD, 2017) starts the 2025-2026 academic year as Associate Professor with Tenure at the School of Journalism, University of Missouri. Dr. Luisi's area of research is health communication.

Workshops: New to KU or need an Adobe refresher? Join JSchoolTech at 11 a.m. on Aug. 29 for an Intro to Adobe Tools at KU. We will show you how to access free tools and the Adobe suite, plus give you a quick look at all the great ways you can use Adobe Express.
The Technology Committee will meet from 1-2 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of every month beginning in September in STF 312. Dates are as follows:
