Greetings from SMBA '20!

The current class has been exceptionally busy since arriving on campus in January.  In addition to a full course load of five classes, the students have been getting valuable sports industry experience in the San Diego market and beyond.

As the semester ramps up, students have been taking turns teaching lectures themselves, covering topics like sports betting, contracts, sponsorships, and personality assessment training. The class started their book reviews last month with a diverse selection of sports and sports business titles.  CLICK HERE for more on each student’s chosen work.
DOUBLE DOSE OF THE PGA TOUR
During their first week of school, #SMBA20 worked behind-the-scenes at the PGA TOUR's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines serving in various tournament support roles which supported several aspects of the tournament including social media, customer experience, charity, and marketing.
In February, a group of students collaborated with the Tiger Woods Foundation to gather valuable customer feedback data at the Genesis Open.

IN THE COMMUNITY
Locally, students supported the San Diego Sports Association at their 73rd Annual Salute to the Champions event. During the event, #SMBA20 students had the opportunity to meet influential San Diego sports icons including Olympic gold medalist Shaun White.
Additionally, #SMBA20 students have worked every home game for the San Diego Legion of Major League Rugby (MLR).
WOMEN IN SPORTS
The women of #SMB20 volunteered to assist with  Women's Day presented by Farmers Insurance. The event featured these outstanding keynote speakers: ESPN's Jessica Mendoza, Professional Surfer Courtney Conlogue, and Chief Executive Officer at World Surf League Sophie Goldschmidt.
In addition, the #SMBA20 ladies attended WISE (Women in Sports and Events) San Diego's Speed Mentor Roundtables event at Petco Park.
TOUR OF PETCO PARK

Thanks Roberto Castro (SMBA '11)!

The #SMBA20 cohort met in front of Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, early last week and were greeted by alumni of the program, Roberto Castro. Petco Park, or “our home away from home” as Roberto and his team affectionately call it, hosts over two hundred events throughout the year, including 81 Padres games, concerts and other sporting events. The park and it’s events in large part owe their successes to Roberto, Manager of Event Operations, and his team.
