| FAQ of the Month With career fairs and conferences coming up, how do I introduce myself to employers? What if they aren't necessarily targeting graduate students in their hiring? As you've probably guessed, preparation is key! Here are two things you can do to get ready for events where you'll interact with potential employers.
Prepare your elevator pitch. Through networking and other experiences you’ll introduce yourself to many people. Being prepared to answer opening questions such as “What do you do?” or “Tell me about yourself" will make introductions easier and lead to more meaningful dialogue, especially at career fairs and conferences. For more about crafting your elevator pitch, see page 6 of the Graduate Student Career Guide (linked below).
Do your research. Because employers attending career fairs often recruit larger numbers of undergraduate-level candidates, they may be less knowledgeable re: open positions for those with advanced degrees. Make it easier for them by researching individual employers and the types of positions that might fit with your degree. This will allow you to say something like, "I noticed you have [describe specific positions/roles] on your team. Could you speak to the roles or tell me who I could contact to discuss those kinds of opportunities?" Review the list of organizations attending our Fall Career Fair on Sept 28 Fair and search under "class years" for those seeking grad students.
