Tips for Grads: Moving Ideas Into Action
One quality consistently associated with leadership is the ability to move ideas into action. The University of Wisconsin has been a powerful force in this process:  the Wisconsin Idea compels faculty, staff, and students to bring their ideas out of the classroom and lab to the lives of the people of Wisconsin.  If you think you have good ideas, but are unsure how to put them into action, there are many interdisciplinary programs available to give a framework and resources.
  • The Center for Leadership and Involvement and the Morgridge Center for Public Service can put you in touch with the right group to help you realize your ideas.
  • For graduate students in the humanities interested in community outreach, the Center for the Humanities sponsors the Public Humanities Exchange that connects graduate students in humanities fields with community partners.
  • For graduate students in sciences, there are also many outreach opportunities that you can become involved in. Also, the Laskar Foundation has held a lecture series—Lessons in Leadership—aimed at young scientists, designed to expand the impact of research beyond the academy.
  • If you can’t find a student organization that fits with your mission or you have a model organization from another institution, consider starting your own student group.
