Question:
At what age should a child be screened if they have a first-degree relative with a bicuspid aortic valve?
Answer:
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital heart disease, with an estimated 2% of the population having this condition. The screening echo for BAV is best as a newborn or after 3 years of age if there have been no concerning murmurs on exam, due to the ability and ease to obtain a complete echocardiogram at those ages. If there are any concerns, we will screen patients at any age.
