Tips for Grads: Inquiry, Discovery, and Creation

By Matthew J. Zinsli, PhD student
You’ve made it through a rough winter and the fickle Wisconsin spring, so now you can look forward to the warm months of summer! As a graduate student, summer can mean travel, research, an internship, or full-time work, but it can also be a time to take a break.
While many students don’t stay in Madison over the summer, for those that do, here are some ways you can enjoy the summer months and explore all that Madison and southern Wisconsin have to offer (between bouts of road construction). Enjoy!

Master's students: What are your professional development needs?

The UW–Madison Master’s Student Professional Development Survey is your chance to share your professional development needs with the Graduate School. The Office of Professional Development wants to ensure that its programs and other offerings cover the topics you most desire, at the times and days most convenient for you, and in a format that is most preferred. Please see the email you received on April 18 for your personal link to complete the 10-minute survey.

Register now for the LEaP Workshop for graduate student teaching assistants

The UW–Madison Teaching Academy invites graduate student teaching assistants to register for the TA-LEaP (Learning Environment and Pedagogics) Institute, a 2-day workshop held August 20-21, 2019. You’ll be introduced to evidence-based practices that have a high impact on student learning, including active learning ideas, syllabus and assignment design, assessment techniques, and information about what students really want from their instructors. Participants will also learn about how learning works and how best to engage students, including approaches that instructors can use right away. For more information or to register visit the Teaching Academy LEaP website.

Build and take your product to the market with Discovery to Product (D2P) summer programs

UW–Madison’s Discovery to Product (D2P) is accepting applications for two summer programs that help campus innovators bring their ideas for groundbreaking products and services to the marketplace, Innovation to Market (I2M) and Igniter. Both programs are free and open to UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students. The Innovation to Market (I2M) program is a 5-week course starting June 5. The Igniter program is an intensive 8-week course starting June 25. Applications are due for both programs on Wednesday, May 15.

Mental Health Resources for Grad Students

According to the 2016 UW–Madison Healthy Minds Study, 94% of UW–Madison students do not think any less of a peer who seeks mental health care, and 90% of students who used mental health care found it helpful. As a student, there are a variety of mental health resources available to you at no cost. A few of these resources are listed here.
SilverCloud. Like YOU@WISC, this resource is entirely online. SilverCloud is a self-guided mental health resource that provides treatment options 24 hours a day, no referral from a mental health or medical provider needed. It includes evidence-based learning modules on anxiety, depression, body image, and stress, designed to help students manage day-to-day stresses and improve resilience.
Let’s Talk. If you’re on-campus, Let’s Talk provides free, informal, and confidential consultations at locations across campus. Drop in to talk to a counselor about any topic – stress, sadness, relationships, academic performance, financial struggles, and family problems are common topics. Counselors can help you explore solutions from their perspective, or, if you’re interested, introduce you to what it’s like to talk to a counselor more regularly.
For more mental health resources, visit the UHS website on mental health.
The Dean of Students Office provides resources to students struggling with a variety of issues, and can be your go-to spot for assistance as a graduate student. To contact the Dean of Students Office's Graduate Student Assistance Specialist Elaine Goetz-Berman directly, email egoetz2@wisc.edu.

Applications reviewed on a rolling basis
Have you been invited to present at a conference or do you need travel funds to conduct research towards your dissertation? The Graduate School’s Student Research Grants Competition (SRGC) is accepting applications for both conference and research travel support for the current academic year. Awards of up to $1,500 are available to all eligible UW–Madison graduate students in programs supported by the Graduate School. Award levels vary depending on the demonstrated need. Funds may be applied retroactively, so even if you have already completed your research or conference travel, you may be eligible to apply.
