Deadline is April 18—don't forget to file!

2022 Tax Returns are due TOMORROW!

The deadline to file is tomorrowApril 18, 2023.  If you haven't already, it’s time to file your 2022 U.S. taxes!

There are two types of tax returns:
  • State tax return: If you worked in the U.S. and/or if you received a stipend, grant, or allowance last year (calendar year 2022), you are legally required to file a state tax return.
  • Federal tax return: If you did not work or receive any income in the U.S. last year (calendar year 2022), you are legally obligated to file the Form 8843.  If you worked or received a stipend, grant or allowance in the U.S., you may need to file the Form 1040NR.

The OIS has arranged free access to Sprintax Tax Preparation for students of Amherst College who file as nonresidents.  Sprintax will guide you through the federal and state tax return preparation processes, prepare the necessary documents for you, and check if you are due a refund.

To use Sprintax to prepare your tax returns:
  1. Gather documents that you need to file your tax returns, including:
    1. 1042-S, for scholarship and grant funds you received through the College
    2. W-2, if you worked in the U.S. and earned wages
    3. 1095-B, the federal health insurance statement (required for federal taxes)
    4. 1099-HC, a Massachusetts state health insurance statement (required for MA state taxes).
*The forms needed to file your taxes may differ depending on your individual tax circumstances. You must also have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
  2. Create a Sprintax account.

  3. Follow Sprintax instructions to prepare your federal and/or state tax return.

  4. Enter the following code in the box on the ‘Review your order’ page to remove the charge from your account:
    1. For federal taxes: 22AHC175F
    2. For state taxes: 22AHC65S
  5. Sprintax will prepare your tax return. Once you complete the preparation process in the Sprintax software, you may need to print, sign and mail your documents to the IRS. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to E-file your Federal tax return. However, this will depend on certain eligibility criteria. If you have a state filing requirement, you must also mail this to the tax authorities. If you only need to file Form 8843, this will also need to be mailed to the IRS.
