Dear Parents and Families,
I hope this finds you enjoying the final weeks of summer and looking forward to the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year. Here in Medford and the Fenway, staff and faculty are currently busy preparing for the arrival of our newest students, who will be on campus in just a few weeks’ times for Pre-Orientation and Orientation. We’re also looking forward to welcoming our returning students back to campus with new programs, resources, and opportunities for engagement. As Director of the Africana Center, my role at Tufts is to help ensure that our students of African descent have access to academic and social resources, and to contribute to broader diversity and inclusion efforts across campus, including those managed and facilitated by the University’s other identity-based Centers. I’m writing today to provide you with a brief overview of some of the support students can find at the Africana Center and to share a preview of the programming we are in the midst of planning for our 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Career Corner: Conversations with the Tufts Career Center

Treat Career ReadinessLike a Course (Plus … Actual Career Courses!)

Which do you take more seriously: obligations or optional activities? When students view career readiness as a required piece of a Tufts education, they are more likely to take the necessary steps to reach their career goals. Here are 3 strategies:
  • Put it on the calendar (in pen!): Encourage your student to set aside non-negotiable time to work toward career goals, much as one would block out time for a class.
  • But … resist the urge to cram: Attempting to pack career-related tasks into a single day or week can become overwhelming, just as cramming for exams has a tendency to backfire. Think of it as a journey, with check-ins scheduled throughout the process.
  • Take advantage of resources: Career Advisors help students with timelines and objectives that align with their individual goals and stages of career readiness, much as they work through academic course requirements.
Speaking of courses, we have three available through the Tufts Ex College: Personal Career Development (2 semester hours; pass/fall; for sophomores), Personal Career Development for Athletes, (2 semester hours; pass/fail; for athletes) and Design Thinking for Career Exploration: Creative Strategies for First Years (1 semester hour; pass/fall; for first years).

What's Happening Academically?

Meet the Advising Deans

One of the biggest transitions from high school to college is understanding how a parent’s/guardian’s role changes. As young adults, students will be expected to take charge of their education, which will be a different experience from high school. We encourage parents/guardians to coach students through their academic experience rather than managing it for them. If you have academic concerns about your student, we encourage you to reach out to their Advising Dean. While Advising Deans are happy to speak to parents, it is ultimately the student we need to speak with, so parents should encourage their students to contact their Advising Dean. While Advising Deans respect the role of parents/guardians in a college student’s success, and while we collaborate with parents/guardians, we encourage student-parent/guardian communication rather than staff-parent/guardian intervention.

Reminder: Optional Tuition Insurance

Tuition Insurance is meant to safeguard your financial commitment should an unexpected health concern necessitate that your Tufts student take a medical leave of absence this year. Every year, college students around the country navigate many physical or mental health challenges, and some students unexpectedly take time away from their studies in the form of a medical leave. The University provides a graded tuition refund for all medical leaves taken at the beginning of each semester. Beyond the first six weeks of each term, a student who takes a medical leave without insurance forfeits a substantial portion – or the entirety – of the payments made toward that semester’s tuition
Tufts is pleased to advise you of the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP) administered by A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. The annual premiums covering both the Fall 2019 and the Spring 2020 semesters ar
  • $507 covering tuition, room and board
  • $401 covering tuition only
You can find more information about coverage online. For cost and enrollment information, view the application.
The TRP works in concert with the Tufts University refund policy as published in the University Bulletin and website. Subscribers are eligible for a 75% refund of insured fees throughout the term even though the University refund schedule may have expired at the time of withdrawal. For withdrawals occurring during the first six weeks of the semester, the TRP benefits are coordinated with and reduced by the University's refund policy
Participation in the Tuition Refund Plan is entirely optional, but we strongly encourage you to consider enrolling. The Advising Deans  support Tuition Insurance and understand how big an impact health concerns have on academic performance.
If you wish to enroll online, please submit the application and payment by the first day of classes, September 2, 2019. Applications cannot be accepted after that date. Questions can be directed to Dewar at 617-774-1555, or to Health and Wellness at Tufts at 617-627-3350.
