MUDEC welcomes new associate director Stephanie Shaheen

by Hannah Horsington, MUDEC newsletter intern
Stephanie Shaheen
This semester, MUDEC students and faculty welcomed a new permanent member of the Château - former Student Activities Coordinator and professor Stephanie Shaheen, who began her role as MUDEC Associate Director on September 1.
Shaheen has had a unique journey at MUDEC. She started out as a student almost 30 years ago, following in her sister's footsteps and studying abroad in Luxembourg where she stayed for a whole year. Back then, MUDEC was located in Luxembourg City, which is also where many students lived, including Shaheen. Just like students today, she spent her free time studying in the Cave and participated in a Study Tour for class.
Unlike students today, she and her classmates had to exchange currency everywhere they went and relied on maps to navigate unfamiliar cities. Calling home was also different, and she said that most students planned a certain time each week to call their families, often using a pay phone at the post office.
After returning back to Oxford and graduating from Miami University, Shaheen worked for a shipping company in Pittsburgh, speaking French for a year, during which time the Student Activities Coordinator position at MUDEC opened up. She moved back to Luxembourg and worked as the MUDEC Student Activities Coordinator from 1994-97.
“My favorite part of the job was watching the students arrive and seeing, sort of, how little they knew and how everything was so exciting and different,” she said. “And then seeing by the end, how they knew how to travel, they knew how to behave culturally. They knew how to do everything that they had not known and they learned so much in one semester. That's amazing.”
After her time as the Student Activities Coordinator, she returned to the United States to continue studying higher education and student affairs. She attended Ohio State University, earning both her master’s degree and her PhD while working as a study abroad advisor.
After her time at Ohio State, Shaheen moved back to Luxembourg, and by 2005 was working at the U.S. Embassy while also teaching at MUDEC. At the U.S. Embassy, she worked in education and culture while also speech writing, event planning, and working in public affairs. On Sept. 1, she left her job at the embassy and began working full time at MUDEC as the assistant director.
“This is definitely where my passion is,” Shaheen said. “Not only teaching, but also getting to spend time with students and sort of shape their experience. [It's] such a full circle moment for me, because 30 years ago I was a student here. And so getting to come back and actually think about affecting and impacting students' experiences and how the program is run, and making it a program that will sustain so that students can come for years and years to come… is really exciting.”

A Weekend in Zurich

by Maddie Kelley, MUDEC newsletter intern
This weekend I strayed from the Discovery Tours and headed to Zurich, Switzerland. Not having classes this past Friday was really beneficial, because my friends and I took an overnight train leaving Thursday night and arriving early Friday morning. Maybe in the long run it wasn’t the smartest idea, considering we were running on maybe an hour of solid sleep, but we were in Switzerland so we couldn’t complain too much.
The most interesting thing that really stood out to me in Switzerland was the crowds of people who were out and about. When we left the train station at 7:30am to find our hostel, the town was obviously still asleep. Needing coffee and something to eat, we desperately searched for a café, finding out that very little was open. We knew that we wouldn’t be checking into our hostel until later in the afternoon, so we spent that time relaxing at the café and sitting by the water. It was the most relaxing and peaceful place to be that early in the morning.
By the next night, the walk down by the lake was so crowded, there was barely anywhere to sit. Being in Zurich for the weekend I was shocked by how many people were walking around the city. Obviously my mind was still in Covid mode, and it felt strange and almost illegal to even be in an atmosphere with that many people. At the same time, it almost felt comforting and gave me the feeling that things were starting to feel normal in the world again.
We spent most of Friday walking up and down the lake and taking in all the nature views we could. We also spent that evening enjoying the weather by the water, relaxing, chatting, and people watching.

Finally getting a good night sleep, we got up on Saturday ready for a hike. We ended up heading to the top of Zurich’s mountain Uetliberg. Uetliberg looked over the city of Zurich but also the lake, showing a great contrast of the beautiful place we called home for the weekend. We got to the top, which was 2854 feet up, and enjoyed the scenery while eating a banana split.
Making our way down the mountain a little while later, we took a couple hours to walk the busier city side of Zurich. This was when it was packed with people, and many flea and farmers' markets were taking place. Eating lunch by the water and debating jumping in for a swim, we enjoyed the beautiful warm weather and scenery.
Before we knew it, the sun was down and the spots by the lake were filled with high school and college students. It’s always super interesting to meet local people in each country we visit. We have been able to learn about their different cultures and how our lives in America are different from their lives here in Europe. I also love how the past two times we have met local kids, it has been their first time interacting with American kids. Even though it was late and getting pretty dark, the streets were still full of life.
Sunday morning came before we knew it and it was time to catch the train back to Luxembourg. Every weekend at MUDEC is full of different travels and activities and I learned very quickly that the weekend is not enough time to explore everything. Switzerland is a country I would love to come back to and maybe next time I’ll visit during the ski season. Once again, another 10/10 weekend full of adventure and I can’t wait until the next one!

Meet the SFC

by Meta Hoge, MUDEC newsletter intern
Each semester at MUDEC a new Student Faculty Council (SFC) is selected to organize activities and represent students for implementing change around the château. The council is partially lead by Daniel Riecker, Student Activities Coordinator, along with a student co-chair. Other positions include a secretary, treasurer, communications chair, environmental chair, and project coordinators.
The first SFC event, a movie night showing Mamma Mia at the Château, was held on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Some of the events the SFC has planned for the semester include a murder mystery dinner, a bonfire with s'mores, additional movie nights and the annual Thanksgiving dinner.
Get to know the students on the Fall 2021 SFC below.
