Adjusting the sails
We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.
~ Bertha Calloway

An Update from our Executive Director, Cindy Threlkeld:

Yesterday I listened in on a virtual meeting that our ESOL Director, Erin, was facilitating with tutors to compare the pros and cons of using Zoom, Skype, and Google Hangout to continue lessons with their students. One described her first attempt to hold a virtual class that usually meets at Erwin Middle School with four parents: one each from Mexico and Belarus, and two from Ukraine. All logged in with either a phone or laptop, and by using the whiteboard feature on Zoom and referring to their workbooks, they carried on without a hitch.

Another tutor shared that her student doesn’t have access to a computer, but wants to continue to improve her writing. So the student writes out the lesson by hand, takes a photo of it with her phone, and texts it to the tutor. The tutor acceses the photo, enlarges it, and then calls the student to review her work.

And the stories are just as creative with tutors working with Rebecca in Adult Literacy and Youth Literacy. We will share their stories of both success and struggle in the weeks that come.

I am amazed and heartened by the resilience and determination of staff, tutors, and students to keep moving forward! Read more on our blog

Dolly Parton Storytime Series

Books from the Imagination Library will continue to go out as scheduled. A special new program, Goodnight with Dolly, is a 10-week series of Dolly read-aloud videos where the Book Lady herself will read one Imagination Library bedtime story each week. The series launched on April 2, and we hope this gift will further inspire a love of books and shared storytime during this important period.

If you are moved to donate

We are in the middle of our Spring Campaign to raise funds to continue our work. Your support is important to us! Please consider a donation.

There are new federal Charitable Giving Incentives: A new above-the-line deduction (universal or non-itemizer deduction that applies to all taxpayers) for total charitable contributions of up to $300. The incentive applies to contributions made in 2020 and would be claimed on tax forms next year. The existing cap was also lifted on annual contributions for those who itemize, raising it from 60 percent of adjusted gross income to 100 percent. For corporations, the annual limit is raised from 10 percent to 25 percent.
