Alums win award at the Kansas City FilmFest International |
|
|
Former William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications Assistant Professor Paul Wenske and his son, Chris Wenske, a 2009 KU graduate, won Best Heartland Documentary Feature for their documentary film, "I'm so Glad: Kansas City and the Roots of Black Gospel Music." The father-son duo won the award on April 14 at the Kansas City FilmFest International. Paul Wenske, who was at the JMC School from 1991 to 1996, is the film's writer, director and co-producer. The film explores a rich but largely overlooked history of Black gospel music that began in pre-Civil War Kansas and took root in the late 1870s, when more than 40,000 African American Exodusters fled to Kansas from the Jim Crow South. Information on future showings of the film can be found at ImSoGladProject.com.
