Welcome to our second CHDCM newsletter of the Fall semester—and the first day of the Fall season! I hope that you’re enjoying the cool mornings, and all the events that populate the calendar at this time of year.
One of these events, highlighted in our previous newsletter, was the CHDCM Convocation, the fantastic annual celebration of the new members of our community. We added a new wrinkle to this CHDCM tradition: the release of the first in a series of CHDCM Laptop Stickers. We’ll continue to release these throughout the academic year at select CHDCM events, and there will be a special reward—from me—for those who collect the entire set! Now, the question I got a *lot* after Convocation was “When is the next one coming?” I’m pleased to announce that our Second CHDCM Laptop Sticker will be released at the launch of our new, biennial initiative: One College, One Exhibition. OCOE, as we’ve taken to call it, is bringing to campus and SOPAC fifty portraits by artist Robert Shetterly. These portraits will serve as the springboard for a monthlong series of events, student showcases, and special guests, drawn from all of our academic departments. These events are designed to both highlight the importance of the arts and celebrate the amazing unity-in-diversity of the CHDCM. Check out our website for details and to RSVP for the OCOE launch event: October 8, 5:30pm, 2nd floor, Walsh Library. Not only will the launch event include food, a signature mocktail, and a world premiere by our Chamber Choir, but those attending will also receive our new OCOE laptop sticker…so join us, won’t you?
With that, though, I’ll close off my part of this newsletter and let you get to the good stuff! There’s a lot to check out in the stories below about the members of our CHDCM community….so read on! As always, keep your good news and event notes coming, and I look forward to seeing you all around campus in the coming days and weeks…and at the OCOE launch on October 8!

Chamber Choir rehearses and performs small ensemble repertoire, giving two annual concerts at the South Orange Performing Arts Center and additional performances on and off campus.
Chorus is a large ensemble of over 60 members, including students, alumni, faculty, and community participants. Known for its distinguished performances at venues like NJPAC and Carnegie Hall, the group presents concerts each semester at the South Orange Performing Arts Center and other locations. Participation is open to all with no audition required.
Jazz Ensemble offers students the chance to rehearse and perform a variety of jazz styles in a small combo setting, with repertoire accessible to beginners in improvisation. Students develop ensemble skills such as phrasing, dynamics, and terminology while receiving coaching and opportunities to improvise, regardless of prior experience. Although prior jazz background is not required, participants must have basic proficiency and music-reading skills on their instrument.
Orchestra is a credited course that provides students with intermediate to advanced skills the opportunity to perform orchestral repertoire alongside faculty and professionals. The ensemble meets weekly for a 90-minute rehearsal and concludes each semester with a concert performance. No audition is required to join.
Pep Band performs at all home games, providing musical cheers with woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments (no electric instruments). Open to students with at least third-year high school proficiency, the band plays medium to advanced marching band charts and requires a strong commitment. While some instruments are provided, students are encouraged to bring their own.
