Sharif Chaudhri Uses Small Talk to Make a Big Impression
Always offering friendly service, Sharif Chaudhri (he/him) takes every opportunity to engage with passengers, asking them about their destination, home or even the musician on their t-shirt. He’ll do everything he can to ensure guests feel special and acknowledged.
Sharif enjoys learning new languages and will often delight travelers by speaking to them in their native dialect. Sharif’s manager submitted his nomination and noted one stand-out example:
“I love hearing exclamations of surprise and delight when passengers hear their native tongue spoken at PDX. Recently, an elderly woman from Thailand and her daughter stopped by Mo’s on their way back home. Sharif noticed that she didn’t speak English, so he made some casual conversation with her in Thai. The woman was clearly touched by the gesture…if the counter weren’t so wide, she would’ve hugged him!"
Sharif was honored at the PDX People Customer Service Awards, where we recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary. What's New with PDX Next: Roof Work Noise Impacts, Window Protection and Bag Road Changes
Roof Work Noise Impacts: Starting today, expect to hear some noisy work overhead in the ticketing area between the hours of 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., while crews cut into the roof from above. This is to access beams inside and strengthen them in preparation for the new roof and main terminal. The work will continue for about a week and the noise impacts will be loud and frequent.
We know working through construction is challenging  that's why we're keeping you in the loop in this newsletter, on our PDX People website and on digital signage in the employee bypass areas. Help your colleagues stay in the know and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter.
Window Protection: Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb 22, you'll see window protection going up outside of the Lardo location on Concourse C. This protective barrier will be in place through early March.
Bag Road Changes: Starting Wednesday, Feb. 23, the south side of the main bag road will narrow to one lane. This change will be in place through May to facilitate work on a mega column.
We're keeping you in the know on what's new with PDX Next on the PDX People website. Have questions or suggestions about construction? Email hello@pdxnext.com or call the construction hotline at 503.460.4339.

Get to Know 7 African American Artists Who Are Building a New Legacy
Black History Month provides an ideal moment to zoom in on Black artists shaking up the world today, and this Artnet article highlights seven contemporary African American creators everyone should know. Their list includes one artist whose work was featured at PDX in 2018 and is now on display at the Port of Portland headquarters building: Jeremy Okai Davis.
Davis' paintings often respond to the standard portrait images Kodak produced into the 1970s. Known as Shirley cards, these images were used to calibrate color film processing and were based on white skin as the norm. In paintings, the artist situates his subjects in the Shirley format, but allows for a depth and complexity of color that would not have been possible on film.
See Untitled (Thelma Johnson Streat) and Untitled (Harry T. Moore), pictured above – both part of the Port's permanent collection – in person near the Port offices' 8th floor public reception area, and see several of Okai Davis' other pieces that were featured on Concourse A in 2018 on the PDX Art Blog.

PDX in Pictures
Rishal Sharma with ISS Facility Services recently submitted these photos showing off two rainbows of sorts: one of Alaska planes in four different liveries, and the other of the more traditional variety arching behind the tower. If you have a photo of life around PDX, email it to PDX People Communications – we might use it in a future PDX in Pictures.
