Tawan Bernkopf Makes Time for Respectful Service
Tawan Bernkopf's (she/her) role as a TSO/Behavior Recognition Specialist takes her all around PDX and – as her supervisor shares – when she comes across a traveler in need, she's always willing to help:
"A visitor at PDX, who was using a wheelchair, found himself stranded at the airport. After experiencing various hardships and obstacles on his journey to Portland, he got stuck a few days before his flight without his boarding pass and identification documents.
He was struggling with what to do next when he encountered Tawan. Though the traveler had some difficulty communicating, Tawan listened with patience and respect, then took action.
Once the gentleman was able to obtain another boarding pass, Tawan guided him through the rest of the process to meet his flight. She walked him to the checkpoint and helped him through the screening process. After he was approved through security, she walked him to his gate and bought him a meal.
Thanks to Tawan, the man had a comfortable wait at his gate and was able to make his flight the following day. This is just one of many times she has made an extraordinary effort for a passenger. She deserves to be recognized for her sharp eye for spotting those in need and her compassionate actions."

What's New with PDX Next: Ticket Lobby Work and Portland Coffee Roasters Closure
Ticket Lobby: Now through Friday, May 19, crews are continuing noisy work around the north elevator core in the ticket lobby. A temporary AED is on the column west of its current location since the AED at the north core is inaccessible.
Portland Coffee Roasters: To get ready for PDX’s new main terminal opening next year, Portland Coffee Roasters in the ticket lobby poured their last cup of coffee on Sunday, May 7. The good news? Your coffee fix can still be satisfied pre-security at Peet’s in baggage claim or Elephants in the south ticket lobby. You can also snag your favorite Portland Coffee Roasters drink post-security...and two new locations will open at PDX in 2025.

Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
The month of May marks a time of celebration for Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States – that includes people from the entire continent of Asia, the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. This month was selected to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush and Congress voted to expand the celebration from one day to a full month.
Take a moment to learn more about the people, messages and meaning of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month:

Construction Teams Stay on the Safe Side
Safety is of the utmost importance to PDX, the Port of Portland and our partners at Hoffman-Skanska, and Construction Safety Week (May 1-5) was perfect opportunity for celebration and education. The theme of this year’s event was "Strong Voices, Safe Choices," which highlighted the importance of recognizing potential concerns and speaking up.
Not all hazards are obvious or easy to recognize, even for those who see and face them every day. This includes mental health, which Hoffman-Skanska addresses with their GUTS room at PDX, a place where the people building our new airport can go for support.
Activities during the week included practicing identifying issues with equipment, a hands-on demonstration of fall arrest gear, and a GUTS room visit from the PDX dog therapy teams. Thanks to everyone who makes safety their job, supports their team, and is ready to recognize, listen and lead toward the safest solutions and outcomes.

PDX in Pictures
We may not have flights to Tatooine, but that's never stopped us from welcoming visitors from a galaxy far, far away. On Thursday, May the 4th (aka Star Wars Day), stormtroopers invaded the ticket lobby – lucky for us they seemed to leave the dark side to join forces with friends at PDX.
