AI in Medical and Residency Applications

Medical schools and residency programs can advance toward more efficient, effective, fair, and informed admissions and selection processes by thoughtfully applying AI. To help schools and programs leverage AI tools to streamline their operations and promote equity, the AAMC – in collaboration with a multidisciplinary technical advisory committee (including GW Medicine’s Associate Dean of MD Admissions, Dr. Ioannis Koutroulis) – developed six key principles to guide the design and use of AI-based selection systems.
SMHS Impact Team: Quality Matters Workshop
The SMHS Impact Team will be running the online, two-week asynchronous version of the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop September 4-18, 2024. All faculty and staff are invited to participate at no cost. Although the workshop is asynchronous, there are two firm deadlines. Participants can expect a 10-12 hour time commitment throughout the two weeks.
Haven’t heard of Quality Matters? It is an independent organization that publishes research-based standards in course design in higher education.
Contact Laurie or Alison if you are interested in attending the workshop or have any questions about QM in general: lbl@gwu.edu or alisonmcguire@gwu.edu
AAMC Mid-Career 2024 Mid-Career Minority Faculty Leadership Seminar
The AAMC Mid-Career Minority Faculty Leadership Seminar addresses the needs of associate level faculty who are historically underrepresented in medicine through knowledge sharing, skill building, and strategy development for career advancement in academic medicine. Using a culturally responsive approach, this program offers networking opportunities, career development planning sessions, and small group consultations with senior faculty and leaders. Interested applicants can visit the registration page for more information and fees.
Register for Webinar: Community-Centered Approaches to Eliminating HIV, PrEP/PEP, and COVID-19 Vaccine Stigma and Discrimination
FREE webinar event, Community-Centered Approaches to Eliminating HIV, PrEP/PEP, and COVID-19 Vaccine Stigma and Discrimination, set for August 8, 2024, from 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM EDT. The event will address efforts to shift public health focus from personal decision-making to the structural inequities that racially and ethnically minoritized communities face. The panel features experts in the field whose findings will appear in a special supplement being published simultaneously on August 8 in HPHR Journal / BCPH Review, the peer-reviewed journal of BCPH. These scholarly papers debunk theories that maintain people as problems as opposed to the conditions they live in. Register for the webinar here.
Upcoming Medical Education Grants and Deadlines
The AAMC  Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) seeks to encourage and support research and innovation that address important problems, answer timely questions, and drive the practice of medical education forward. These grants aim to advance the work of all those engaged in improving academic medicine. Additional information about past grant award winners, their research and innovations, and the outcomes of their work is available upon request from gea@aamc.org
Below is a link for the GEA national & regional grant page. The deadlines for submissions have not been posted but typically the national grant pre-proposal & the NEGEA full proposal grant deadline is around September 30th each year. The NEGEA offers two types of grants: Mini-Grant & Scholars Grant. The latter is a career development grant for an individual. Dr. Samanani received the grant last cycle. Additionally, if you have ideas and collaborators in other regions you can also be part of the other regional grants.
If you are interested in applying and would like advice, please contact Tony Artino (aartino@gwu.edu) and Zareen Zaidi (zzaidi@mfa.gwu.edu) to schedule a time.
