Arizona State 4-H FCS Day | May 13th
FCS Day is on May 13 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Maricopa Agriculture Center. It is a competition for everyone not just those interested in Family and Consumer Sciences. Seniors can qualify to represent Arizona at the Western National Roundup in Denver.
The Consumer Decision Making contest is where youth take their judging skill and put them to use in real-world scenarios. For example, the class could include 4 cereals or 4 pairs of pants, and given a scenario, the youth will judge how to place the class. The other contests are also fun for all youth, but they are a bit more focused on FCS.
The Fashion Revue is open to youth modeling both handmade and purchased garments. Contestants will give a brief presentation to the judges and model the outfit. Judges may ask questions.
The Skill-a-thon is just about identifying items in the area of interior design, foods, and clothing. This contest is adjusted for juniors. Items might be as simple as a hammer or kitchen fork or harder like a brocade fabric or a Palladian window.
The Quiz Bowl is a fun contest with buzzers. Youth are often surprised at how much they actually know about FCS topics.
We are also planning some fun team competitions that will be impromptu. Each team will be given a similar selection of materials and they will need to create an item. These contests are a Cook Off, Cake Decorating, and Fashion Design.
