Father Doug Owens named new vicar general
Bishop Richard F. Stika has appointed Father Doug Owens, pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Lenior City, as the Diocese of Knoxville's newest vicar general and moderator of the curia. The bishop said that Father Owens will be a good addition to the diocesan leadership team in helping him, vicar general Father David Boettner, and diocesan chancellor Deacon Sean Smith in fulfilling the ministry of the diocese. Artisans from EverGreene Architectural Arts continue to place hand-painted canvas murals of saints, martyrs, the Apostles, and the Holy Family on the interior of the dome of the new Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The center photo (top) of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus measures nearly 25 feet high and 17 feet wide. The artisans are working on scaffolding nearly 14 stories above the cathedral floor. East Tennessee Catholic Magazine honors life of Msgr. Xavier Mankel
The July issue of the East Tennessee Catholic Magazine should be arriving at your door this week. The issue features a tribute to Monsignor Xavier Mankel who died on June 21. Monsignor Mankel was instrumental in the founding of the Diocese of Knoxville in 1988. This issue will also feature Bishop Stika's monthly column and coverage of the Sending of the Neophytes, where Bishop Stika welcomed 227 new members to the Catholic Church in East Tennessee.

Mass and Investiture for Monsignor Bill Gahagan
A Mass for Monsignor Bill Gahagan will be celebrated at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at All Saints Church in Knoxville. He will be invested as a monsignor, a title given to him by Pope Francis at the recommendation of Bishop Stika. Monsignor Gahagan has served the Diocese of Knoxville since its inception in 1988.
