Heads Up! New Pennsylvania Law Has Gone into Effect!
According to PennDOT, in 2024 nearly 10,000 car accidents in Pennsylvania involved a distracted driver. The number one distraction was cell phone use.
Senate Bill 37, aka Paul Miller’s Law, bans the use of cell phones while driving. Under this law it is illegal to hold or support with any part of your body, your cell phone or any other electronic device while operating a vehicle. This includes times when you are stopped at a red light or you’re at a standstill in traffic.
Although Pennsylvania's distracted driving law took effect last year, drivers have enjoyed a grace period during which violations have resulted only in warnings.
Starting June 5, 2026, the grace period is over. If you are caught using your cell phone while driving, you will face a fine of $50 plus court costs and fees. If you have an important text you need to send, you can ask someone else in the car to do it for you, or you should pull over and park your car before using your phone.
