It can be very challenging to understand the varied payment types and options as they relate to healthcare. What exactly is Medicare? Will I ever use the Long-Term Care Insurance that I purchased 36 years ago? Are there retirement living options available to me if I don’t have any savings or assets? As an individual’s healthcare needs change, these questions, among many others, also arise. In an effort to help our readers better understand the financial side of healthcare, a multi-part series will appear in Village Ventures over the next several months. We hope you find this series helpful and informative
Medicare is a federal insurance program that only covers skilled nursing and/or rehab in a nursing facility and after a qualifying event for up to 100 days per benefit period.  Medicare does not cover custodial (long-term) care in a nursing or assisted living facility. Medicare regulations do not change based on the state in which you reside.  Medicaid, however, is a jointly funded, Federal-State health insurance program for people on low incomes.  Medicaid regulations and guidelines can differ from state to state. Medicaid will pay for custodial and "long-term" care if the patient meets the specified criteria for daily functionality and meets financial criteria for Medicaid.  Both Medicare and Medicaid have patient co-pay amounts.

PROVIDING SHELTER  FOR SENIORS IN NEED
Imagine what it would be like to face some of life’s storms; food insecurity, lack of affordable housing, declining health or being unable to afford the cost of nursing care without someone there beside you to help you. Many seniors in our area try to face these storms alone every day but they don’t have to. The Warm Hearth Foundation helps seniors on our campus weather these storms by providing financial assistance through our annual fund and endowment. In 2016 alone, 324 seniors received assistance from programs on our campus.
Our spring campaign focuses on raising funds to grow The Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment and we could really use your help.  Established by one of our own residents and named for a long-term member of our Board of Trustees, the endowment helps us to provide for seniors in need of healthcare services at the Village but who are unable to afford the cost of this care.  The annual earnings from the endowment are used to fund charitable care at our health care facilities at the rate of $50,000 per year.   Our goal is to grow the endowment to $1.3 million by 2018 so that we can keep pace with the ever-increasing needs of this most vulnerable population.
Please consider making a gift to the Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment by visiting www.retire.org.  Your generous support helps seniors find shelter from life’s storms.
