Greetings from Genetics and Biochemistry

Headshot of man, David Clayton.
The 2023-24 academic year is winding down and our students are busy studying as I write this — it’s final exams week, and graduation is just around the corner! Our many exceptional students have been recognized with impressive awards at the College, University and national levels, as you’ll see in the stories below. I’m also proud to note the many examples of our students engaging in community service and society, which is a core part of Clemson’s mission.
Our faculty have been busy, too! We hosted more than 15 two-day, in-person campus visits over the last three months to recruit three new faculty members. I should be able to report on the outcome of those searches in the next newsletter. Meanwhile, I’m delighted to announce the arrival of professor Shahid Mukhtar next month, whose expertise spans plant biology, computational biology and genetics, and hes bringing along five Ph.D. students. In total we’ll have 20 new Ph.D. students in our program this Fall, the most ever for our growing program.
And don’t let me forget our phenomenal staff! Meredith Bradley, our office manager, received the 2024 annual Hattie B. Wagener award in the College of Science for her excellence and loyalty. Elizabeth Brown was just promoted to a position in the College’s post awards office, having served us well as our Department’s accounting specialist for several years; we look forward to welcoming Ashley Anthony as her replacement. Kate Price, our administrative assistant, has been with us for only six months, and she’s already been nominated for a staff award.
If you come to visit us (welcome!), you’ll find us in a new location. Our Department office is no longer in Poole Hall! Just a week ago we moved into a fantastic new suite of offices comprising a tower that spans all three floors in the atrium of the Life Sciences Building. The new construction was built just for us!
Have a great summer!
Go Tigers!

Genetics student Elizabeth Caldwell named Truman Scholar

Elizabeth Caldwell has been working in associate professor Michael Sehorns lab since her first year at Clemson, focusing on the role a DNA damage repair pathway plays in a relatively underresearched rare immunodeficiency disease. In April, Caldwell was awarded the Truman Scholarship, given to high-achieving college students who show commitment to public service and the potential to continue that service beyond graduation. She is the fifth Clemson student in history to receive this honor.

Meet our newest professor

Meet our newest assistant professor, Shyamalika Gopalan, Ph.D., who joined the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry with the Center for Human Genetics in late 2023. Gopalan talks about how she got interested in genetics, what she aims to teach students and what brought her to Clemson in a brief interview.
