CDC Health Advisory:
First Case of Clade I Mpox Diagnosed in the United States
November 19, 2024
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Health Advisory to provide information about the first case of clade I mpox diagnosed in the United States and recommendations to clinicians about preventing, diagnosing, treating, and reporting mpox cases. The case, confirmed by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), had recently traveled to areas experiencing clade I monkeypox virus (MPXV) transmission and sought medical care for mpox symptoms in the United States. Historically, clade I has caused more severe illness than clade II, however, recent infections from clade I mpox may not be as clinically severe as in previous outbreaks, especially when cases have access to quality medical care. The overall risk of clade I mpox to the general population in California and the United States continues to be low.
Clinicians should notify their local public health department if they have a patient with mpox-like symptoms and recent travel to Central or Eastern Africa. Public Health will coordinate MPXV clade-specific testing

Clinicians should encourage vaccination for patients who are eligible.
