You’ve Almost Completed Spring Semester!
The end of the semester is right around the corner. You’ve made it through midterms, completed registration for fall (and possibly summer) classes, and are on your way towards summer vacation. With a few weeks left, let’s take some time to focus on some resources available to help end your semester on a high note.
Who Impacted Your Freshman Year? Let us know!
If you have visited us here in the Shepard Center, you know that we’re interested in doing what we can to understand and help with the freshmen experience. One of the ways we’d like to continue to do that as you wind down the final few weeks of your first year is to understand who has had the biggest positive impact on your freshman year experience. Below please find a link to the SARC “Shepard’s Shepherds” Survey – named as it is because we want to know who best “guided” our freshmen class this year. The survey asks just 3 questions and is guaranteed to take no longer than two minutes of your time!
The information you provide will be used to identify groups and individuals, both on campus and off, who have had the biggest impact on the University of Portland class of 2020 during this first year. We will also do our best to contact the individuals named in this survey to let them know of their influence.
  • If you include your name on the survey, we will name you in the letter sent to your nominee as the first-year student who selected this “shepherd.”
  • If you do not include your name on the survey, we will still send a letter to your nominee, and let this person know he or she was nominated by “a first-year student.”
  • If you would like to be considered for the prize (listed below) but do not wish to include your name, fill in your ID number; we will choose our winner from those who submit ID numbers.
Those who complete this survey with an ID number included will be entered to win a $10 gift card to Barnes and Noble – and every little bit helps when you’re saving for books! The survey must be submitted by Friday, April 13th, 2018 in order to be eligible.
Please contact the Shepard Academic Resource Center at sarc@up.edu or 503-943-7895 with questions.

Founders’ Day 2017
Tuesday, April 11th is Founders’ Day here at the University of Portland. Take advantage of the day off of classes (expect classes starting 4 PM or later on this date) and check out what your fellow Pilots have been researching! Poster sessions will be offered throughout the day. View the full schedule on the Founders’ Day website
Fall 2018 Registration & Reserved Seats
Make sure to check the Fall 2018 Registration Schedule to see your registration day and time!
Remember that the University reserves seats in Core classes for incoming students to ensure that seats are available across all class times that are offered. You can review all the classes that have reserved seats on the Registration Resources page.
Midterm Grades Are Coming - What Are Your Options? Withdrawing From a Course
At this point in the semester, it can be helpful to reflect on your standing in each of your classes. Professors will begin submitting midterm grades this week and throughout and just after spring break.  What midterm grades are you expecting? Have you reviewed each syllabus to see what assignments and tests are left that could contribute to raising your grade?
If you are concerned about a class, it’s best to have a conversation with an advisor or program counselor to assist in making decisions. These advisors can help you weigh the pros and cons of staying in a class or withdrawing, as well as connect you with resources that can help you succeed academically if you stay in the course. The final deadline to withdraw is Monday, April 9th. Stop by the Shepard Center in BC 101 or call us at (503) 943-7895 if you’d like to speak with someone about the withdrawal process.
Orientation Assistants Needed for Fall 2018!

Event planning, group facilitation, public speaking and customer service are some of the areas in which each OA will gain experience. Check out the OA position description and application. Thinking About Transferring?
As the year comes to a close, some of you may be thinking about transferring to another college or university. We at the Shepard Academic Resource Center would like to help make the transfer process as smooth as possible for you. Keep in mind that you need to apply and be accepted at the school to which you are transferring to. A few other important things to remember:

• If you have registered for classes at UP for summer or fall semester, complete a withdrawal form and turn it into the Registrar’s Office. This form can be found on your Pilots page under Pages > Registrar- Students > Withdrawal.
• You can request for an official transcript from UP be sent to the school you are transferring to (available through Self-Serve).
• If you have any kind of financial aid, send an email to finaid@up.edu stating that you do not plan to return to UP next semester.
• Make sure to update your forwarding address in Self-Serve so any mail that comes to you here can be sent to you.
• You need to go through the process of cancelling your housing contract if you live on campus and signed up for housing for next year– complete the housing form to cancel your contract, and submit the form to the Residence Life Office.

Not sure if transferring is the right option for you? Have questions about taking a leave of absence? Call the Shepard Academic Resource Center at (503) 943-7895.

Between a Mid-term and a Final Place?
Regular practice with a peer tutor in the Learning Commons can make the difference.

At this time of year, we find ourselves between mid-terms and final exams, and this need not be a hard place. By working with our trained peer tutors on a regular basis in the Learning Commons in BC 163, you can help yourself to make your learning more durable, reliable, and accurate. Engagement with your peers in the Learning Commons creates a social experience that can make learning and studying more motivating. What does regular practice with a peer tutor look like? If you meet once every week, you will come far. You can even bring one or two others and create your own small learning community. The Learning Commons offers peer tutoring in a variety of subjects, and connecting with tutor is very simple:
The tools to learning are at your disposal. So get out from any bottlenecks in your learning by connecting and learning with one or more of our many trained tutors. Come early and come often since regularity is the key. Like and follow the Learning Commons on Facebook for up-to-date learning tips and information.
