Two University of Tennessee, Knoxville, graduate students have received Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) awards. Since its inception in 2014, UT ranks number one in the country for SCGSR awards with 19 recipients.

17 UT Students Offered Fulbright Awards

UT recorded another impressive year for Fulbright Student awards, matching last year’s numbers with 17 current students and recent graduates offered fellowships. Earlier this year, UT was named one of the nation’s top-producing Fulbright Student campuses of 2019–20

Fifteen incoming freshmen are the newest members of the Haslam Scholars Program, UT’s most prestigious undergraduate academic scholars program. Thirteen of the 15 scholars in this year's cohort are from Tennessee. The scholars will receive scholarships to cover tuition, fees, and room and board, as well as a study abroad program.

As a young girl growing up in Kentucky, Lora Humphrey Beebe learned about schizophrenia after a family member was diagnosed with the disease. Her experiences lead her on a lifelong journey to help both her family and others coping with this illness.

Eighteen graduate students will receive $3,600 stipends from UT’s Summer Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) Fund managed by UT’s Office of Research and Engagement. The Summer GRA program awards faculty members who provide a plan for graduate students to supplement and enhance research support.

To date, over four million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide. A team from UT and Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) led by Jeremy Smith is using ORNL’s IBM AC922 Summit supercomputer to identify promising compounds that may result in a drug to fight this disease.

Recognitions

Yilu Liu honored with Pioneer in Power Award—David Anderson named as the new Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Veterinary Medicine—Mohan Subramanian named the recipient of the 2020 Henry Granjon Category C (Design and Structural Integrity) Award—Susan Hamilton received the American Public Gardens Association Award of Merit—Justin Crowe named Director and Statewide Program Leader for 4-H—Nine Students in the Department of Nuclear Engineering earned Nuclear Energy University Program Awards.
