Announcing the P.I. Academy Workshop Series

Research Development is excited to announce the launch of the P.I. Academy, a new annual program designed to orient faculty across all disciplines to UC Santa Barbara's research community and resources. Any faculty member is welcome to attend any topic of interest. Through the P.I. Academy, faculty actively engage with presenters and facilitators on a number of core research topics designed to ensure investigators are well-positioned to apply for and secure external funding for their research and creative endeavors.

UCSB SAGE Junior Fellows Program (Postdoc opportunity)

The SAGE Center for the Study of the Mind invites highly-motivated applicants for the 2019 SAGE Junior Fellows Program. This cross-departmental program supports the intellectual development of early-career UCSB postdoctoral scholars across the University. The SAGE Fellows form a group bound by a common pursuit: to understand the mind and brain through a variety of complementary disciplines.

Eligibility: The program is designed to provide supplementary support to current UCSB postdoctoral scholars who are early in their academic career (within 5 years of their PhD). Scholars are sought from a wide range of disciplines, including anthropology, chemistry, communication, computer science, economics, ecology, engineering, history, linguistics, literature, mathematics, molecular biology, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy & religious studies.

National Science Foundation Program Officer Visit

John S. Cruickshank is the Staff Associate for Policy in the Division of Research on Learning (DRL) and the Independent Research and Development (IR/D) Expert and Conflict of Interest (COI) Official in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR). His expertise is in the areas of STEM policy, broadening participation and capacity building to minority communities, and Federal grant management.

John will give two talks during his visit, which will cover the topics of Education and Human Resources programs, funding opportunities, and proposal writing for faculty and NSF post-award grant management for the SRO:

Office of Naval Research Program Officer Visit

A Century of Science for the Navy: From the Earliest U.S. Radar to Today’s Electromagnetic Materials Program

Abstract: The creation of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in 1923 and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in 1946 were pivotal events in the development of science and technology for the U.S. Navy and the nation. I will discuss the historical conditions that led to the creation of NRL and ONR including the development of industrial research laboratories in the early part of the 20th Century and university research for the military during the Second World War. I will present examples of technologies developed by NRL and ONR including radar and GPS. Finally, I will discuss employment opportunities at NRL, the various ONR programs to fund research at universities, and my program in electromagnetic materials.

Bio: Brian R. Bennett received all his degrees from MIT: SB and SM in geophysics and PhD in materials science and engineering. He conducted research at the Naval Research Laboratory for 22 years. He is currently Program Officer for Electromagnetic Materials at the Office of Naval Research and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
