University of Kansas students received two first-place awards, four second-place awards and five honorable mentions in the College Visual portion of the 2024 Kansas Association of Broadcast Student Awards.
Sydney Clark finished first in the on-air personality category, and Alias Moser, Meredith Mueller and Claire Decatur placed first in the 60 Seconds or Less PSA for My Bus Lawrence.

Eric Thomas receives the James Frederick Paschal Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association director Jennifer Bensko Ha on March 15 at Columbia University in New York City.

Eric Thomas, KU lecturer and executive director of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association, was presented with an award for leadership in scholastic journalism at a conference in New York City last week. The James Frederick Paschal Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association recognizes leaders of state press associations that support student journalism. Headquartered at KU, the Kansas Scholastic Press Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

Kevin B. Blackistone from ESPN visited students in JMC 304 and JMC 305 on Thursday, March 7. He discussed a range of topics with students such as issues stemming from sports betting, the demise of print and the Kansas City Chiefs’ name. Blackistone spoke at also spoke at the “Race and Sports in American Culture: A KU Symposium” on Wednesday, March 6.

The Advisor of the Year nomination site is open through April 19 at this link. The Advisor of the Year recognizes one academic advisor who creates a caring and inclusive environment, exhibits knowledge and insight into academic programs and university policy and effectively engages students with campus resources and opportunities. The Rising Star Award and The Larry Draper Outstanding Office/Liaison Award are also open for nomination.
Genevieve Desmarteau and Grace Lotz from KCUR joined assistant professor Chris Etheridge's Audience Experience class on March 4 and March 6 to talk about the organization's branding efforts. The class pitched ideas about how KCUR could reach new audiences across their many platforms.

JMC School volunteers needed April 3-5: The JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Conference is fast approaching, and we need your help to make it a successful event. We’re looking for volunteers to help load and unload our materials at Stauffer-Flint Hall and unload and load them in Kansas City. We’re also looking for help staffing our booth. This is a great way to connect with future Jayhawk Journalists, earn service hours and talk about all the wonderful opportunities we have to offer. Join the SJMC Diverse Students Association in a presentation about how to report discrimination given by the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX on Wednesday March 20, in the Clarkson Gallery at 4:30 p.m.
The inaugural Iles Award for Research in Editing is open for applications: This award of $1,000 is intended to support research pertaining to the teaching or practice of editing written language. The Iles Award is made possible by a generous gift to the Bremner Fund by Sarah Iles Johnston. More information and application details are on the KU JMC School website.
The Lacy Internship Assistance Program is open to all eligible University of Kansas students from all majors, although preference is given to students who are active members of the Dole Institute of Politics Student Advisory Board (SAB). To join the SAB, students may contact the dolesab@ku.edu at any time during the school year. Applicants will be notified of their award decision after May 1 for Summer and Fall applications and December 1 for Winter and Spring applications. Awards are distributed twice a year, up to $2,400. Awarded applicants will receive awards respective to their anticipated needs, merit, and relevance of the mission of the Dole Institute in relation to specific internships.
The Dole Institute of Politics is taking applications for Internship Assistance Awards. Applications are due April 1 for summer and fall internships. More information and details on how to apply are available here.

Imagining the Indian: Screening & Discussion set for March 20 in Marvin Hall: This documentary examines the momentum of the movement surrounding the use of Native American mascoting. Summer Camp Job Fair set for March 28: The Summer Camp Job Fair will be 1-4 p.m., Thursday, March 28 in the lobby of the fourth floor of the Kansas Union. Summer Camps are seeking enthusiastic KU students to join their team for the upcoming summer camp season. Students can gain leadership experience, build their resume, and make some money this summer working at a summer camp. More information is available here.
TCU provides summer housing for interns, workers in Fort Worth area: The Texas Christian University campus in Fort Worth, Texas, is providing limited, affordable housing for students who may be interning or working in the Fort Worth area for summer 2024. Interested students must contact housing@tcu.edu by April 1.
Networking event set for March 19: Mocktails & Mingle: Media & Communication will be held 5:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, at the Jayhawk Welcome Center. Students can network with professionals in the media and communication industry. In this informal setting, students will meet creators, managers, researchers and leaders and hear about their experiences in the workforce and their career paths. From 5 to 5:30 p.m., students can attend a networking practice session to learn and practice the basics of networking, pick up tips on making introductions, entering and leaving a conversation, and advice on getting the most out of a networking event.
