On Thursday, September 21st, students, faculty, and staff gathered in Dewberry Hall for Mason in Color, a collaboration between the Patriot Activities Council (PAC) and the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment (CCEE). Mason in Color is an event that gives the campus an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural artistry of our BIPOC students. The event featured performances, informational tables and highlights, a cultural snack bar, and was hosted by Ed Mabrey, the 2019 APCA Spoken Word Artist of the Year. Ed was not the only spoken word artist in the room, however.

Jneva Norfleet, a student in the PHD Higher Ed Program at Mason and a Christian Spoken Word Artist, performed a powerful piece called “TAKE A STAND” that she wrote in 2020 at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. She decided to perform it at Mason in Color because it fit in with the theme of sharing heritage, culture, and background. Jneva said “it was important to perform ‘TAKE A STAND’ because there are many things still going on in our community and it’s not just a Black or White thing. It’s up to all people to be a part of the solution.”
Other performances included compelling and engaging artistic pieces by Geciara, Yuz Ata, Nishat Sultana, ZZBOW, and Ta-Seen Reaz Niloy.
Ta-Seen Reaz Niloy, a second-year PHD student in Information Technology, performed a dance using three distinct excerpts from three different songs. “The first piece conveys the profound love and longing of a Bangladeshi person who awaits her distant lover with heartfelt yearning. The second piece beautifully depicts the traditions and rituals of village weddings in Bangladesh,” she said. “Lastly, as Bangladesh relies heavily on agriculture, its fate is often tied to the whims of weather. During seasons like summer, when rain is scarce, farmers face hardship and turn to prayer, seeking divine intervention for much-needed rain.”
When asked why she wanted to share her art and culture at Mason in Color, Ta-Seen responded “it helps people from different backgrounds understand, care about, and enjoy each other's differences, which makes our human experience better. Sharing my Bangladeshi culture lets you show the world its unique history, customs, and values, that can help people from other cultures understand and appreciate my heritage while ensuring it's passed down to future generations.”
In addition to the performances, there were tables around the room staffed by Registered Student Organizations (RSO) and campus offices. Each table shared information about their RSO or office, and how students can benefit from being connected. “I hope that students were able to learn more about the opportunities they have here on campus to make connections and network with others interested in the same areas they are,” said Hailey Salmen, one the PAC Campus Event Leads who helped planned the event.
